PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Intermediate School Principal is responsible for the instructional leadership of their school. He/She assumes the immediate responsibility for the total operation of the school and its internal and external relationships and activities. The Principal provides the educational leadership which enables the staff to meet the needs of all students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Supervise the instructional program of the Intermediate School.
  2. Seek ways to improve curriculum and teaching methods and to coordinate the program with elementary and secondary schools in ways that help in making a better school.
  3. Administer all facets and coordinate all resources of the school in a manner which will provide maximum opportunity for learning.
  4. Provide leadership in providing for differences in abilities, interests, and growth patterns of the students of the school.
  5. Provide leadership and direction to maintain a safe school environment including student conduct through the effective use of allocated resources.
  6. Effectively analyze academic reports and make data driven decisions to drive student achievement.
  7. Visit classrooms regularly where a report of teacher and/or observation indicates that such action might forestall serious problems of a disciplinary nature.
  8. Establish high levels of visibility and implement proactive strategies to create a positive learning environment.
  9. Organize and schedule classes with consideration for teacher competencies, space allotment and time.
  10. Promote co-curricular, extra-curricular, and other intra-school activities as an integral part of the educational program.
  11. Administer the school athletic program, keeping strictly within the bounds of Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rules and regulations.
  12. Attends athletic and social events, wherever possible, in which the school is represented, or in which the school requires representation.
  13. Assign professional and non-certified staff within the building.
  14. Provide for the orientation and supervision of beginning teachers or teachers new to the building.
  15. Encourage staff to develop existing capacities and to pursue additional learning.
  16. Cooperate with teacher training institutions in the assignment of student teachers to the building.
  17. Coordinate special services available to the school, such as guidance services, home and school visitors, audio-visual coordinators, school health services, and the special competencies of central office personnel, consultants, and other resource personnel.
  18. Meets with representatives of outside children's agencies in trying to positively affect improvement in parent-child-home relationships and conditions.
  19. Teacher ratings as directed by the Superintendent of Schools or designee, utilizing the observations of assistants and consultants, as appropriate.
  20. Administer the public relations program of the school, interpreting school policies, programs and achievements to parents, community, individual groups and others interested in the school.
  21. Provide leadership in the selection of materials and equipment used by the staff, as required, to implement the program of the school and supervises the maintenance of records and inventories of all items pertaining to the educational program.
  22. Coordinate the arrangement and presentation of school assembly programs, as required.
  23. Make budgetary recommendations based upon staff evaluation of existing programs and proposed extensions and/or changes.
  24. Coordinate expenditures of allocated funds within District procedure, including the creation of Title 1 budgets and resources
  25. Confers with school personnel and parents in reference to students, so as to serve the best interests of individual students.
  26. Be responsible, in cooperation with the Director of Operations and other central office personnel, for the condition and maintenance of the school building, as well as, oversee that the school operates as a safe and secure environment.
  27. Keep well informed of educational developments that will enable him/her to provide dynamic leadership.
  28. Perform special duties as may be assigned by the Director of Leadership and Accountability or the Superintendent of Schools or designee.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE:
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum regulations, curriculum-related issues, assessment and assessment analysis, scheduling procedures, teaching strategies and technology support systems.
  2. Evidence of continuing professional development.
  3. Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to maintain a positive school atmosphere.
  5. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative teaching environment.

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Possess an active and valid Administrative PK-12 certification.
  2. Minimum five (5) years teaching experience with a minimum of three (3) years at the secondary level (preferred)
  3. Previous administrative experience at the secondary level (preferred)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  1. Ability to reach above and below the waist
  2. Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects.
  3. Some stooping, bending and twisting of the body required.
  4. Ability to lift and/or carry supplies and/or papers weighing no more than 20 lbs.
  5. Ability to sit, stand, walk or move throughout the building and/or office, often for extended periods of the workday.
