University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring Full-Time Physician Assistants (PA) and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners to help support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for our unique UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship program. The advanced practice provider (APP) fellow will spend time at NICU sites including: UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Hamot, and UPMC Harrisburg (dependent on site location). This position will work both day and night shifts throughout the program.

 

As a medical learner, the APP fellow will follow work hour requirements set forth by the academic program as determined by the Medical Program Director and Lead APP of the Fellowship program within the work hour guidelines as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The APP fellow will participate in an educational program provided by the UPMC business unit and is expected to satisfy the academic requirements of the program.

 

The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship program will span the length of 12 months with rotations through multiple UPMC NICU sites to facilitate an in depth world-class educational experience.

 

The Staff Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a Physician Assistant / Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The Staff APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Staff APP has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Staff APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Staff APP encompasses the beginnings of leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Staff APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Staff APP begins to demonstrate a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession. Upon completion of the UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Neonatology Fellowship, successful graduates will maintain Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider level positions throughout UPMC.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical history and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan for critically ill or injured patients.
  • Under the direction and in consultation/collaboration with the attending physician or designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans interventions, documents and communicates information to the health care team, and documents patient care services with a daily dictated or electronically generated note that conforms to documentation guidelines.
  • Performs selected invasive patient care procedures based on the patients’ needs as determined collaboratively by the physician supervisor and the Allied Health Credentialing Committee of the medical staff. Documents procedures, patient response/s and results in the patient record.
  • Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and hospital guidelines.
  • Provides instructions, information and support to the patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Consults with attending physician or designee upon the identification of significant unexpected changes in patient status.
  • Provides continuity of patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

 

Physician Assistant (PA)

  • A graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
  • Minimum requirement of Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS)
  • Eligible for clinical privileges as a member of the Affiliate Staff by the Medical Staff Office
  • Eligible for Pennsylvania Prescriptive Authority and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • Must be recommended for appointment by the Program Director and satisfy academic programmatic requirements in order to maintain employment

Licensure/Certifications

  • A current state PA license or board eligible and certified by the National Commission on Certification (NCCPA) is required for Physician Assistants
  • A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required
  • Pennsylvania Act 33 Clearance will be required
  • Pennsylvania Act 34 Clearance will be required
  • Federal Act 73 Clearance will be required

 

Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC)

  • A graduate of an accredited Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program is required
  • BSN, MSN is preferred
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
  • Eligible for clinical privileges as a member of the Affiliate Staff by the Medical Staff Office
  • Eligible for Pennsylvania Prescriptive Authority and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • Must be recommended for appointment by the Program Director and satisfy academic programmatic requirements in order to maintain employment

Licensure/Certifications

  • A current state PA license or board eligible and certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, eligible for licensure by PA board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
  • A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required
  • Pennsylvania Act 33 Clearance will be required
  • Pennsylvania Act 34 Clearance will be required
  • Federal Act 73 Clearance will be required
