Work LocationNew York Expected durationThe internship is for a minimum of 4 months full time with possibility for extension to a total of 6 months based on the needs of the office and availability of the candidate. Desired start date: February 15, 2024 Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe unit is seeking interns who wish to gain professional, hands-on experience, in particular working on enhancing the UN News app, specifically, versioning content for a mobile first experience, and modifying what is currently prepared for UN News platforms, incorporating online text, digital audio/video and social media. Our editorial agenda encompasses international issues such as development, human rights and climate change, and other UN priority areas. The intern's duties will include: -supporting News Writing, multimedia, and audio/video production within the unit, including gathering information from diverse sources. -assisting in researching and analyzing information on assigned topics/issues. -helping to assess news value and other potential impact. -using visual elements like charts, graphics, and maps, and data visualization tools to provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data. -reviewing the partnerships database by collaborating with the UN Partnerships Unit and looking for new digital media and other partners, including finding trustworthy entities that work on fact-checking and media literacy. -performing research on content distribution channels by studying best industry practices and understanding the priorities and needs of our target audience. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Global Communications, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); 2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. LanguagesEnglish or French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship advertised, fluency in both English and Chinese is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. Additional InformationThe internship is located in the Chinese Language Unit, UN News Section II of the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications, which produces News and feature stories on multimedia platforms including radio, video, photo and web. Interns work under the supervision of the Chief of the Chinese Unit, UN News Section II. It is designed to be an in person internship. Intern Specific textInterns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
