New Glarus Woods State Park – Seasonal Opportunities (New Glarus)

In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR has multiple LTE (Limited Term Employee) Parks and Recreation Specialist positions available at our New Glarus Woods State Park in New Glarus, WI.

These positions are expected to begin in spring 2024, work through the summer, and end in the fall.

Parks and Recreation Specialists are responsible for a combination of outdoor maintenance and/or groundskeeping work in addition to providing customer service for property visitors and/or campers. Parks and Recreation Specialists often operate machinery such as UTV's, ATV's, chainsaws, snowmobiles, hand tools, power tools, mowers, tractors and other motorized vehicles.

30% - Direct and perform recreation operations activities to ensure they conform to established standards to include mow grass, pick up litter, clean public use areas and beaches, painting, maintaining restrooms and campsites, remove trees and brush, repair and maintain trail surfaces, operate vehicles and light equipment and perform repairs and maintenance to equipment and buildings.

40% - Direct and conduct project management, repair, new construction, and resource management activities to facilities, property, and equipment to protect the capital investment, reduce damage, and costly repairs. Perform grounds and maintenance activities to include repair work on trails, parking lots, roads, public access sites, and other public use areas. Perform and/or assist other resource professionals on land and habitat management activities.

15% - Manage the administration of admission sticker sales and other fee charges. Assign, audit and process sticker accounts to ensure control of such accounts as well as prompt remittances.

10% - Manage properties and their facilities to protect public health and safety.

5% - Assist the Recreation Specialist, Ranger, Park Manager and/or Property Superintendent with monitoring the work and performance of other team members or volunteers and any other duties as assigned.

These positions pay $15.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 15-04.

Rates offered to selected applicants will depend on the experience of the candidate and the position being offered. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

These are Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

Required Qualifications:

• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public
• Customer service and cash handling experience
• Knowledge, skills and experience of general maintenance operation
• Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual
• Ability to work a modified schedule; nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
