Job description

Responsibility for providing day-to-day support, maintenance, security and troubleshooting the network infrastructure environment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Information Technology (IT) Director.

  • Performs a wide variety of technical and administrative duties in relation to the ongoing development, installation, maintenance and administration of the City's local, wide area and Wi-Fi networks.
  • Builds and manages the City's network devices (switches, firewalls, spam filter, mail archiver, VPN's, etc.).
  • Builds, manages and maintains the City's physical and virtual server infrastructure in order to ensure smooth operation and maximum uptime of production applications..
  • Implement and manage cybersecurity measures to safeguard the City's infrastructure against internal and external threats.
  • Responsible for maintaining network operations to minimize downtime and outages.
  • Troubleshoots and leads recovery effort for network outages.
  • Utilizes network monitoring tools to evaluate performance, troubleshoot issues, monitor throughput and evaluate configurations. Corrects problems as needed.
  • Troubleshoots and provides hardware and software problem resolution to user-related issues so that computer operation disruptions are minimized.
  • Responsible for implementing best practices to prevent data loss or corruption, including backup solutions and redundant systems.
  • Backs up and restores servers, switches, routers, firewalls and other network devices.
  • Responsible for entering and managing support tickets, projects and tasks using the City's ITSM software.
  • Responsible for documenting and managing infrastructure changes and maintenance utilizing the City's change management process.
  • Maintains VOIP infrastructure including switches and devices.
  • Works effectively with vendors and contractors to deploy and maintain network infrastructure.
  • Provides local and remote end user support.
  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Network Engineering and Security, or related field,
  • Minimum of five years of experience in computer operations, network support, network security, and hardware/software support,
  • Security+, Network+, ISC2 SSCP, ITIL 4 Foundation and JNCIA-Junos certifications are preferred, and
  • Previous supervisory experience highly desired.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid Montana driver's license.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of networking, computer hardware and software installation, network security, maintenance and repair.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately diagnose complex network, hardware and software problems and make necessary repairs.
  • Proven ability to design, deploy, upgrade, maintain and support all network devices and servers
    1. Network Switches
    2. Firewalls, SPAM filter, Email Archiver
    3. Wireless AP's, wireless client devices
    4. Windows operating systems (server and desktop)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, other government agencies, vendors and the general public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position supervises the Support and Endpoint Specialist positions within the division and may assign tasks related to software/systems management.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work will be conducted in an office setting or in the field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, climb, twist, reach, kneel, push, pull, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate a computer, office equipment, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone or two-way radio; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. There may be an occasional need to work beyond the 40 hours per work week for a special project or emergency scenario. This is an exempt position and ineligible for overtime.


TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local to other City work sites during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
