If you’re looking for a career where you can find meaning and purpose, come join our Chapter as the NC Applied Freshwater Scientist! Not only will you fulfil conservation objectives in the beautiful freshwater systems of North Carolina, but you’ll contribute to conservation goals through many networks. You’ll possess strong communication and project management skills to advance ecological understanding and enable more on-the-ground conservation. You’ll be responsible for working with partners to evaluate and prioritize potential projects in selected NC watersheds. You’ll also assist, and at times lead, Chapter staff and leadership in order to secure funds to support science needs, effective policies, as well as on-the-ground conservation and restoration projects.
The NC Applied Freshwater Scientist reports to the NC Director of Freshwater and Coastal Programs with strong team relationships throughout the North Carolina field offices and with TNC’s broader Freshwater Network. Some field work is likely, which may require work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. The position is based in Durham with hybrid work options possible.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s Degree and 5 years’ experience in freshwater science/ecology, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with North Carolina freshwater ecology, hydrology, wetland ecology, and aquatic biota.
• Track record for building and maintaining collaborations with partners and stakeholders, including state agencies, federal agencies, and conservation partners.
• Technical skills in spatial analysis and advanced statistics, using programming languages such as R, ArcPro, Google Earth Engine, python.
• Experience in spatial prioritizations and utilizing watershed models (e.g., SWAT, Sparrow).
• Experience in monitoring, evaluation, and learning of field-based restoration projects, including using field equipment and boats.
• Record of successful grant writing, reporting, and general project management.
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in climate change analyses.
• Experience managing staff or volunteers.
• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
