Job Description:
Would you like the opportunity to work with exciting employees in the Plant Program Area - Native Plant Conservation Program? If so, the Plant Protection and Conservation Program area is currently recruiting for a Laborer (Botanical Field Assistant).
As a Laborer (Botanical Field Assistant) you will focus on botanical, ecological and experimental data collection at field-based project sites across Oregon. Work will include surveying, monitoring and collection of rare and native plants. Employees will record field observations, methods and project progress, and will enter field collected data and perform basic analysis. The position requires regular coordination with program staff and occasional assistance with greenhouse projects and operations.
Our Laborer (Botanical Field Assistant) will be a temporary full-time position and will not exceed six months or 1,040 hours. This position is expected to begin late-March and end by September 30, 2024. This position is stationed in Salem, Oregon, and is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Working conditions
Work will occur outdoors in all types of weather and requires walking, standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods on steep or uneven terrain in remote areas. Work will require driving long distances and include overnight travel. Employees will occasionally be exposed to dust, fumes, noise, and unpleasant variation in temperature. Work requires lifting and carrying heavy objects and working with or around chemicals.

Desired Attributes:
Priority consideration will be given to candidates with-
Bachelor’s degree or college coursework in botany, plant physiology, natural resources or a related ecological discipline.
Experience with Botanical Field work, data collection and use of dichotomous keys
Familiarity with flora of the Pacific Northwest

Per the Pay Equity Law passed in 2017, a pay equity analysis will be conducted to determine what pay step the successful candidate will be offered. The analysis will be based on the relevant experience, education, training, and certifications documented in the application materials. On average, candidates new to state service will most likely be offered compensation in the lower to mid-level of the salary range.
