Basic Job Function
Responsible for implementing Nature Explorers, a weekly series of 60-minute outdoor program for registered families consisting of one adult for every child. This constructivist exploration of surrounding seasonal landscapes for very young children (ages 2-3) and their grown-ups will include songs, stories, and a very simple, seasonally appropriate make and take experiment or craft that allows children to continue their investigation back at home/in their neighborhood. Work under the supervision of the Program Manager of the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organizational culture throughout the institution.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with Everett Children’s Adventure Garden Manager to design and lead each week’s activities around a Garden/Theme based on a curricular template.
Set up and clean-up all program materials needed for program in whichever outdoor or indoor location is designated, changing each week.
Teach 10 young children and their caregivers in a 60-minute outdoor exploration of signs of the season and a short make and take activity (10am-11am).
Provide feedback on refining and improving this program.
Qualifications
Prior inquiry-based science teaching experience with 2–3-year-olds
Experience in outdoor education and/or degree in the natural sciences, early childhood education or museum education.
Able to work independently as well as on a team.
Dependable, responsible and organized
Outgoing, creative and engaging
College graduate
Additional language skills a plus
Pay rate: $28/hr
Schedule: Sundays 9:15-11:45am, 6 weeks each season depending on class registrations
