Boston Harbor City Cruises is seeking a Naturalist Manager for our operation in Boston, MA.
About You:
This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences' RESPECT Service System.
About the Opportunity:
The Naturalist Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a whale watch naturalist research and intern program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all aspects of a naturalist research and education program.
  • Foster and grow partnerships with conservation agencies, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions.
  • Communicate with Operations team about all seasonal management areas, dynamic management areas, and slow zones in accordance with protective species restrictions.
  • Coordinate reports of North Atlantic Right Whales, Whale Entanglements, and Whale Harassment events in accordance with the Northeast Regional Whale Watch Guidelines, NOAA Fisheries, Whale SENSE, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
  • Communicate with Operations staff and attend weekly meetings to ensure naturalist staffing on all whale watches.
  • Narrate whale watch trips, which include a safety talk, harbor tour, whale identification, and messaging that includes ecological, educational, and conservation topics.
  • Quality check and review whale watch product, including fact checking scientific and educational content including teaching tools and other multimedia platforms.
  • Oversee the naturalist teams' weekly blog summaries and photos for website and social media content.
  • Assist Operations Team that all required trainings for whale watch crew are complete and up to date.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and managing a team of naturalists and interns.
  • Responsible for maintaining the proper scheduling of all naturalists and interns to ensure optimal coverage.
  • Oversees time and attendance for naturalists, including time off requests and approvals, ensuring accuracy and compliance to maintain efficient staffing levels.
  • Collaborate with management to ensure budgetary guidelines are met.
  • Monitor staff and intern performance and provide them feedback and recognition for their contributions.
  • Work in conjunction with the Associate Director of Volunteer Program & Internships at the New England Aquarium to hire and train interns, providing them feedback, guidance, and career growth opportunities.
  • Manage data collections and sharing to local partners.
  • Complete Safety Sensitive Training and participate in Safety Drills.
  • Attend mandatory company meetings and trainings.
  • Works to ensure compliance with all company policies.
  • Additional job duties assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:
  • 3+ years experience working as a naturalist with a whale watch company, preferably in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and/or the Gulf of Maine.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Marine Science, Biology, Environmental, Zoology, or Educational related field preferred.
  • Management experience and/or experience training staff/interns
  • Data management skills, including quality checking/quality assurance.
  • Marine photography and field data collection experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and customer service skills.
  • High attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment, both independently and in a team.
  • Must be able to work in rough sea conditions and in all variety of weather conditions.
  • Will be required to be available for work on nights, weekends, and on all major holidays.
