The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy seeks applicants for the role of Researcher and Writer in National Security policy. This position supports the Director of the National Security Policy Center (NSPC) with the development, design, and implementation of research projects within the center. Opportunities exist for independent research and writing in line with NSPC strategic priorities, making the position appropriate for individuals with independent research interests in US foreign policy and interNational Security and those considering PhD training in political science or related fields.
The NSPC at UVA Batten provides evidence-based teaching, research, and policy engagement on pressing security issues facing the United States and the globe. We prepare students and security professionals to address the most challenging current issues by seeking to increase knowledge, build capability, develop relationships, and improve communication within the U.S. government, between the U.S. government and academics, and between the U.S. and foreign powers. The NSPC builds “constructive counterparts,” across US government and among key international partners, who are trained in rigorous analytical methodology and informed by the best research.
This is a full-time in person position.
The Researcher and Writer will support the Director and Executive Director on key projects including but not exclusive to academic articles and books, policy white papers, and government reports. The individual occupying this role will be responsible for conducting original research under the direction of principal investigators, editing research products and leading student research teams. They will manage in-house and external publications, including press releases, profiles, and articles.
Other responsibilities may include:
Conducting data analysis related to new and ongoing research projects
Contributing to the development and implementation of research protocols
Collaborating with fellow researchers within and outside of the center
Presenting research findings at conferences and professional meetings
Assisting in the training and mentorship of student researchers within the center and at Batten
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in related field and 3 years of relevant experience. Masters degree will be considered in lieu of experience
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
The ability to collaboratively work with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders
Applicants with a background and/or familiarity with foreign policy and international affairs will be a major asset in the position
Security clearance eligibility is preferred
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $60,000-70,000 commensurate with experience.
This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
Preferred start date in April or May of 2024. The position will remain open until filled.
*This is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
