Overview: 

The Nanofabrication Research Lab (NRL) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) We are seeking a Technical Professional to coordinate lab operations, oversee equipment repair and installation, and support ongoing research efforts in NRL. This position resides in our Nanomaterials Synthesis Section within the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at ORNL.

 

The NRL cleanroom houses 10,000 sq. ft. of class 100/1000 clean room space for conducting material modification using advanced lithographic, etching, thin-film deposition, and characterization tools. These facilities are designed to minimize free floating particulates in the air and is equipped with deionized water, equipment cooling water, compressed air, yellow-light rooms, purified and dried nitrogen, and toxic gas sensing and abatement equipment. You will work within the NRL team to provide technical guidance and hands-on support of nanofabrication tool installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and training. You will also provide safety and operations support within the NRL and manage activity-based safety guidelines for resources within the NRL cleanroom. In addition to coordinating with other NRL staff to manage facility and instrument operations, maintenance/repairs, and training, you will contribute to CNMS research to develop process guidelines and recipes for thin-film deposition, etching, and characterization.

 

The CNMS is one of five nanoscale science research centers in the U.S. and has a world-class in-house research program and as an Office of Science User Facility, supporting over 600 users per year who access specialized equipment and staff expertise to conduct research.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Installation, maintenance, repair, and safety oversight of various nanofabrication processing tools within the NRL cleanroom
  • Coordinate user access and training for NRL resources and contribute to process design and development for multi-step nanofabrication processes
  • Contribute to laboratory operations and lab space management including the purchase and management of materials and chemical inventories, coordinating tool installation and maintenance, and supervising material handling
  • Generate processing and tool operation guidelines and operating procedures
  • Conduct training for users on equipment used in lithography, thin-film deposition, and etching
  • Assist in general cleanroom and laboratory space upkeep and maintenance

Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. in engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics, or related field and 2 years of experience; a M.S. in the same areas and 1 year of experience; or a PhD in the same areas

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven communication skills, both written (including computer) and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support researchers and cleanroom operations
  • Dedication to safety and service
  • Technical experience working in a semiconductor fabrication or cleanroom environment.
  • Experience in vacuum system installation, repair, and/or operation
  • Experience in semiconductor processing or the development of nano/microfabrication processes
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning and management
  • Specialized computer scientific programming experience in (e.g, MATLAB, Python, CAD, LabVIEW)
  • Experience in materials characterization techniques, such as SEM, AFM, XRD, BET, GC-MS, FTIR
  • A demonstrated ability to manage task schedules, communicate project progress and outcomes, and adjust and communicate project plans according to observations
  • Experience solving complex etch, deposition, and/or lithographic systems common to the semiconductor industry
