Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501©(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, anticipates hiring 4-5 seasonal Wildlife Technicians to join BCI's Science Team and conduct fieldwork in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada or California for a North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)-One Health project from May to September 2023.
The NABat-One Health project aims to use the North American Bat Monitoring protocol to study the occurrence and distribution of bat populations across the United States and monitor bat population health.
Wildlife Technicians are expected to work for extended periods of time, travel long distances on a daily basis and occasionally camp in remote locations. Fieldwork will include deploying acoustic monitoring devices, finding bat roosts, setting up mist-nets to capture bats, handling bats to identify and collect samples, and meticulously entering data collected in the field. Wildlife Technicians must be comfortable working with field supervision and safely in the field. Wildlife Technicians will report to the One Health Project Coordinator and will work with a Wildlife Crew Lead to conduct fieldwork. Wildlife Technicians will be expected to work approximately 44 hours/week and be compensated $17.00 - $18.00 per hour plus overtime, based on experience. The anticipated start date is May 15th, 2023.

This position is ideal for someone looking to gain experience: working in conservation biology, capturing and handling bats, working for a conservation nonprofit organization whose mission is to end bat extinctions, and working on a project that will directly inform science and conservation of bats.
We encourage anyone meeting 70% or more of the requirements to apply. Position Description:
- Conduct acoustic monitoring following the NABat protocol.
- Assist the Crew Lead in sample and data collection.
- Mail samples in a timely manner.
- Conduct quality analysis/quality control for all data collected.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, landowners, and other partners.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with project manager and crew leader for project planning, oversight of field safety and logistics, field protocol, and equipment organization and maintenance.
- Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
- Hike with backpacks that weigh 30+ pounds.
- Work nocturnal hours
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required Knowledge/Experience
- Have or be working towards a Bachelor of Science in biology, ecology, natural sciences, or a related field
- Ability to follow written protocols and comfort to ask questions and clarify instructions
- Experience managing and entering data (e.g., competency in MS Excel)
- Valid driver's license
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster
Preferred Knowledge/Experience
- Experience conducting fieldwork with bats, including mist-netting and acoustic monitoring
- If you have prior experience handling bats, we encourage you to apply for the Wildlife Crew Lead position.
- Demonstrated experience managing and entering data
- Completion of first-aid training course
- Experience working with other people in fieldwork settings
- Proof or pre-exposure rabies vaccination and/or rabies titre results within 12 months
Work Characteristics and Competencies:

- Comfortable communicating with staff and with outside stakeholders
- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Comfortable working in harsh weather and at night
- Required to wear N95 masks when working in proximity to bats and gloves if handling bats
