Job description

Program Summary:

The Music Therapy Intern is expected to assist with all aspects of Music Therapy programming, while being supervised by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Following the Music Therapy department's mission, vision and strategic plan the intern will implement Music Therapy principles and best practices as noted in the America Music Therapy Association Guidelines. Interns will provide a safe, structured environment to build therapeutic relationships, encourage emotional expression and emotional regulation through music, become involved members of the community and embrace health and wellness. Interns will assist with the planning and implementing of the Music Therapy practices, scheduling clients and managing participant caseload, ensuring all documentation is current and accurate, communicating/collaborating with families/caregivers, St. David's Center peers, etc. to provide the best care for all participants. Interns will work 40 hours a week throughout their internship. The Music Therapy Intern is supervised by the Music Therapy Program Coordinator.

Position Overview:

Through Music Therapy we work on the enhancement of physical, cognitive, social, and affective development of every individual through personalized Music Therapy goals. Working alongside Certified Board-Certified Music Therapist, interns learn to support, then plan and facilitate Music Therapy interventions that target social and emotional development though self-regulation. Interns learn to create individualized goals and plan of cares based on assessments, design and implement Music Therapy interventions for individual and group clients and evaluate client progress. 

  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing activities related to Music Therapy.

  • Collaborate with families, St. David's Center staff, and community partners to implement programming that meets the unique needs of all participants.

  • Provide for the care and monitor the safety of the participant(s), assuring that their rights as an individual are maintained.

  • Assist with monitoring and reviewing each client's plan of care.

  • Assist with daily documentation, quarterly progress reports, annual documentation and billing as directed by supervisor.

  • Seek opportunities for leadership, collaborative teamwork, innovation and program development. Assist in refining program procedures and administrative duties to enhance the quality of services for families and staff.

  • Assist in the accountability of program adherence to policies and procedures.

  • Consult with supervisor as necessary on individual cases and program policies.

  • Complete required documentation.

  • Participate and provide encouragement in all Music Therapy sessions and provide direct care of client(s) as directed by supervisor.

  • Ensure participant(s) are safe and active in communication and emotional regulation.

Schedule: 

Monday through Friday, times vary dependent on client needs, in general, hours of service take place between 9am and 6pm. Occasional Saturdays

Pay:

Unpaid Internship; eligible for mileage reimbursement

Internship Qualifications:

You might be an ideal candidate if you meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and an acceptable driving record.

  • Must pass the Department of Human Services background check or additional background checks as indicated.?

  • Currently enrolled in Augsburg University earning either a bachelor's or master's degree in Music Therapy.

  • Applicants must have the ability to use clear and understandable written and verbal English.

  • Must be able to monitor the safety and well-being of the participant(s) by managing, both verbally and physically, and active or behaviorally involved participant(s).

  • Ability to learn and perform procedures for the care of an individual with intellectual/development disabilities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both through written and verbal communication.

  • Demonstrate?good organizational skills and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:

  • First Aid and CPR preferred.

  • No experience with people with disabilities is required; however, a desire to work with people and a willingness to learn is essential.? Experience with individuals with disabilities highly desired.
