Position: MSC SMART Inspector (1099) - 150910
Location and Position: Chesapeake, VA
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours of Work: 20-40 Hours Per Week
Travel: 50%

Position Description:
• Conduct ship checks, inspections and surveys to assess the material condition and operational readiness of marine shipboard HM&E components and systems.
•Assess compliance with regulatory standards and ship specification.
• Must be well-versed in marine and complete ship engineering systems to include but not limited too; diesel, steam, gas turbine and electric high voltage propulsion systems, auxiliary shipboard systems, marine electrical systems, deck equipment, shipboard system equipment troubleshooting, and generator overhauls.
• Develop equipment operating instructions, manuals, and testing procedures for main propulsion and auxiliary systems aboard various shipboard platforms to assess equipment for proper operation within recommended manufacturer and ABS, USCG, Naval and MSC regulatory requirements.
• Ability to review drawings, technical manuals, work items, design reviews, condition reports, SITREPS, conduct photo documentation, and develop databases allowing searches for key information in written correspondence.
• Ability to work in a team oriented environment while interfacing with stakeholders and cross functional teams to ensure necessary commitments and targets/deadline/goals are met.
• Assist with the requirements of customer research requests efficiently and thoroughly.
• Must be willing to travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations.
• Direct mechanical and engineering design, construction management, and material procurement experience.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical/marine engineering, naval architecture, or other similar engineering program
• USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), with the following rating and endorsements: a minimum of 1ST Assistant Engineer (steam, motor or gas turbine) of unlimited horsepower (the MMC may be in a “Continuity” status but only if less than five years) or a current registration in any state in the United States as a Professional Engineer.
• Eight (8) years of related post-graduate technical design experience related to commercial and/or U.S. Naval Ships.
• Experience in commercial ship operations with an emphasis on material readiness and maintenance studies, reliability engineering and technical data review.
Additional Requirements:
• Expertise in ship design, marine, ocean engineering or naval architecture often gained through maritime school education or similar background desired.
• Experience working with ship and ship system design principles and practices.
• Familiarity with maritime fuel systems, refrigeration systems (HVAC), compressed air systems, auxiliary shipboard systems, and piping systems desired.
• Experience with: Main Propulsion Diesel Engines and associated equipment; working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules desired; working with shipyards.
• Applicant must be highly skilled in both oral and written communications and be capable of productive and efficient work with limited or no supervision while interacting effectively with all departments throughout the organization.
• Possess strong analytical skills.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve common problems and issues related to the job. Strong, proven problem-solving skills.
• Applicant must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
• Climb tall ladders, crawl tanks/bilges in confined spaces, inspect from aerial lifts, and work in adverse environments for long periods. Periodically lift up to 50 pounds and be able to walk to/from job sites.
