Job description

Requisition Id 12556

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

We are seeking an MRI Support Engineer who will focus on helping ORNL design, conduct, and analyze MRI measurements of turbulent water flows in a broad variety of application areas. This position resides in the Collection Science and Engineering Group in the Materials Characterization Section, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Division, National Security Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

What You Will Be Doing:

As part of our team, you will work closely with group members to design, plan, prepare, and conducting safe testing and analysis for MRI measurements in turbulent water flows across a variety of application areas. Design and planning include experimental designs using 3D CAD systems with handoff for additive manufacturing capabilities, experimental setup and design, MRI sequence assessment and adjustment on a variety of potential MRI systems but nominally Philips systems initially, and 3D measurements of velocity, concentration, temperature, and/or particle laden flows. After testing, analysis of the measurements, characterization of uncertainty, and preparation of final reports and products are essential for customers. Most of the work can be done remotely, to include using virtual machines to simulate MRI sequence performances. Some travel required (up to 10%).

All team members deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Medical Physics, or a related discipline and 2 years of experience in engineering applications using MRI systems to conduct phase-contrast velocity measurements. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3D CAD design with ability to work with additive manufacturing capabilities
  • MRI Sequence modification to include parameter adjustment, assessment of performance for varied sequences and coordination with R&D staff from possible MRI manufacturers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements: This position is a casual hire, meaning that the position will work at no more than 50% time, when required and funded.

Visa Sponsorship:

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Q clearance:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
