Job description

This position is located in the Warehouse Section of the Logistics Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. The Motor Vehicle Operator is required to exercise care and caution in the operation of vehicles and comply with all Federal government and local ordinances and restrictions.Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/12/2024.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Dexterity and Safety
  • Interpret Instructions, Specifications (mobile equipment operations)
  • Materials
  • Technical Practices
  • Without more than normal supervision
  • Work Practices

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid Commercial Driver's License.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Drivers at this grade level exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. The physical effort exercised by the employee requires incumbent to be in excellent physical condition and able to handle, lift, or carry items weighing up to 70 pounds. Driver is required to be able to drive, handle, manipulate, and control in a proper and safe manner gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 7,000 pounds and less than 26,000 pounds, a 3/4-ton truck, or a forklift of approximately 7,000 pounds to 18,000 pounds capacity. Work is performed both inside and outside of warehouse. The employee may work inside areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, and poorly lit. May be occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. The work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones because of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading the vehicle. Work may require protective clothing such as steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, mask, and back support. Often required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions.Education: This job does not have an education qualification requirement.Employment Type: FULL_TIME
