Our mission is to save lives, reduce injuries and economic loss, administer Ohio's Motor Vehicle laws and preserve the safety and wellbeing of all citizens.
Location/Hours:
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol
Report In Location - 7051 Glenn Hwy Rd, Cambridge 43725
Hours Worked: 8:00AM to 5:00PM; Working days and hours may vary

What You'll Do:
Inspect Motor Vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law by entering & exiting vehicles & bends, stoops & utilizes mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to physically & visually check vehicle mechanical components (e.g., brakes, shoes, linings, drums, hoses, air reserve tanks & measurements, vehicle suspension, springs, steering (e.g., drag links, tie rods; frame cracks); Enter & retrieve information in &/or from numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases; Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass; Operate state owned Motor Vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in Motor Vehicle inspection; Properly set up inspection sites by placing safety control signs, cones & equipment in position & removing the same at end of inspection period; Conduct inspections of driving schools; Prepare necessary forms for inspections.
Inform the owner &/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition; Observe the driver to determine any condition present which would prohibit, by law, the operation of a Motor Vehicle; Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections;
AND 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook.);
AND formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary; valid driver's license.

Supplemental Information

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Works outside exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, fast moving vehicles, highway noise & angry vehicle owners; conducts inspections in confined spaces under automotive vehicles utilizing a creeper.


  • This position may be filled by a layoff or certification eligibility list.
  • This position will be filled in accordance with the bargaining unit agreement if applicable.
