Job Description
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) UDOT's Motor Carrier Division is looking for curious, diligent individuals to evaluate commercial Motor Carriers for compliance. As an investigator, you will use your interpersonal, analytical and communication skills to interview individuals and companies, investigate them for compliance, and then compile detailed reports of your findings.
Principle Duties
As a Motor Carrier Investigator, you will:
  • Plan and conduct unannounced roadside inspections of commercial motor vehicles and driver documentation to determine driver and company compliance; note deficiencies and declare vehicles and/or drivers out-of-service in accordance with established policies.
  • Independently plan and carry out civil investigations and/or audits into private property, for-hire, agricultural, passenger and hazardous material commercial Motor Carriers; determine known facts, obtain pertinent information via personal interviews, examine company records, etc. and compare the information against state and federal regulations to determine compliance; discuss findings with the respective companies; offer technical assistance to resolve the problem and support corrective action.
  • Use agency software, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro to create detailed reports of findings and provide evidence for enforceable violations.
  • Provide the motoring public, drivers, commercial Motor Carriers and neighboring agencies with technical assistance, education and outreach support as it pertains to state and federal regulations.

  • Working conditions - work will occur in variety of settings:
    • Risks found in a typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
    • Risks of active work sites requiring the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g. working around operating machines, working with hazardous chemicals, working around live animals, etc.
  • Physical requirements - work will be varied:
    • Typically, the employee will be seated to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc.
    • Work will also require physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
    • Work may occur in inclement weather
  • Frequent travel may be required.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a minimum of five NTC/CVSA courses and their required certification criteria.
  • Professional development pay in the form of a stipend may be offered upon the achievement of full certification.
  • Employees may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
