Mosquito Surveillance Technician Overview:
Under the supervision of the Mosquito Surveillance Supervisor of the Mosquito Vector Control Division, the Mosquito Surveillance Technician position will collect and process field samples, assist in special/collaborative projects and will assist other areas of Mosquito and Vector Control as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conducts environmental surveys to identify appropriate habitats and seek permission from public and private properties for use of property.
  • Sets and retrieves mosquito trapping devices from different habitats for collecting various mosquito species.
  • Process mosquito samples and prepare for identification.
  • Assist in the preparation, use, and maintenance of field and laboratory surveillance material and equipment.
  • Participates in the deployment and evaluation of novel surveillance trapping devices, methods and techniques.
  • Assist in the preparation of all mosquito attractant for trapping purposes.
  • Provides education and education materials to Harris County residents as required.
  • Other duties as assigned including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
  • At least six (6) months of experience in mosquito control operations.
Licensure:
  • Valid Driver's License (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required for daily surveillance and collection of species.
  • Must acquire a Texas Certified Pesticide Noncommercial Political Applicator's License within one year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to develop, implement, improve, and learn new techniques pertinent to field/lab operations
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to plan, organize and execute tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including weekends and occasional holidays.
  • Must be able to accurately follow written and oral instructions and complete assigned tasks satisfactorily.

  • Full-Time | Grant-Funded
  • Non-Exempt | Up to 40 hrs. per week.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays as required to accomplish the mission of MVCD.
Work Environment:
  • This position entails Office/Laboratory work and Field work.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs., be in good physical health, able to tolerate high heat and humidity for extended periods of time outdoors while working in a variety of urban and natural environments.
