Mortgage Underwriter

This is a “flex” position with work from home days along with onsite days based at our Round Lake Beach branch until May 2024 when we move to our new Lake Forest corporate office.

What you'll do in this role:

As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will be responsible for underwriting conventional, FHA, Jumbo, and Home Equity loans following established credit union, agency, regulatory and investor guidelines. You’ll also evaluate mortgage loan files and assesses risk based on compliance, agency, investor, and company guidelines to ensure salability with minimal loss. 

Your day-to-day will include:

• Reviewing and analyzing borrower profiles, credit reports, property valuations, title reports, income documentation and assets. This includes complex business returns and financials for residential mortgage applications, including first mortgages, home equity and home equity lines of credit. 
• Communicating with processing and sales teams to provide updates, clarification on outstanding conditions and deficiencies identified on loans, and to assist in interpreting underwriting guidelines.
• Serving as point of contact on product and investor changes for all production staff. Working with management to effectively deliver appropriate training content.
• Maintaining company service level and turn-time standards.
• Responding to audits and post-closing issues in a timely manner.
• Approving, declining or counteroffer loans within limits of assigned authority.
• Responding to underwriting-related questions emailed by internal team members. 

What you’ll need to join the team:

• High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business or Related – Preferred
• 5+ years’ experience of mortgage underwriting or related – Minimum
• DE Chums Certification – Preferred
• Verbal and written professional communication skills.
• Ability to be organized, have attention to detail, and superior judgement.
• Knowledge in all levels of mortgage underwriting and mortgage insurance polices.

• Ability to commit to 40 hours per week during business operation hours
• This is a flex role at our Round Lake Beach branch until May 2024 when we move to our new corporate office in Lake Forest so we are seeking local candidates (Northern IL/ Southeast WI).
