Mortgage Loan Underwriter

The Mortgage Loan Underwriter will ensure the member follows all requirements of the mortgage application procedure.  The Mortgage Loan Underwriter duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

1. Underwrites ethical and salable real estate and residential Mortgage Loans and evaluates risk while ensuring the quality of each loan submitted.

1. Approves loans, issues alternative options, or adverse action accordingly using sound judgment while applying Credit Union loan policies and procedures. Validates the data entry to the appropriate Loan Operating System and evaluates all applicable documentation as required by job function.

1. Evaluates all documents and conditions loan accordingly and identifies loans for exceptions while ensuring proper procedures are followed for approval and documentation.

1. Clears or resolves any issues and escalates integrity issues as appropriate and ensures files are compliant with internal guidelines and external regulatory requirements.

1. Maintains knowledge of loan product guidelines, internal loan policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements. Coaches and mentors assigned operations staff and assists with training and guidance as assigned.

1. Underwrites and evaluates Home Equity and Residential Mortgage Loan transactions. Underwrites conventional, FHA, VA, and CRA Residential Mortgage applications in compliance with credit union loan policies and procedures.

• Effective Mortgage Loan document and product/parameter expertise.
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, accountable and responsible, detail oriented, organized, proactive and self-motivated.
• Ability to learn quickly in an environment of constant change and effectively apply knowledge.
• Proficiency with automated underwriting systems (Desktop Underwriter & Loan Prospector)
• Pass all annual training requirements.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Well versed in Mortgage Loan process flow.
• Highly skilled on the telephone, organized and able to handle overall member experience with outstanding service.
• Prior experience 5+ years of Mortgage Loan underwriting or similar position.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret government regulations, agency guideline update and interpret internal lending policy.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, members, and the gen1eral public.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, debt-to-income, cash flow analysis.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to carry out detailed written and/or verbal instructions.
• Ability to solve problems involving concrete variables in standard situations.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
