The Monitor Technician of the Critical Care Unit will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to age-related needs to the patients served on his/her assigned unit. The staff member demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed for the Pediatric/Adolescent/Adult/Geriatric patient group.
The Monitor Technician performs cardiac monitor observation, interpretation and receptionist duties. He/she demonstrates performance consistent with the philosophy and goals of the unit and organization, remaining flexible to changing systems.
He/she is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practices, treating staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect. Performance factors include those skills that translate into quality patient care such as:
A. Current knowledge and skill for cardiac monitor observation and interpretation.
B. Excellent communication skills - verbal and written.
C. Organization and prioritization skills.
D. Correct transcription of orders.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical/Service Responsibilities:
a. Maintains continuous close observation of cardiac monitors - both CCU and telemetry.
b. Documents rhythm strips accurately.
c. Communication about rhythm changes are clear and directed appropriately.
d. Report is comprehensive covering all patients and their rhythms.
e. Equipment is accounted for and follow up is completed.
f. Troubleshooting monitoring equipment is essential.
g. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development stages and is able to assess
and plan age-appropriate care.
Staff Responsibilities:
a. Answers telephone courteously and relays messages accurately.
b. Maintenance of the integrity of the patient chart - pre-admission, during hospitalization and
assembly of discharge chart.
c. Notification of admitting department of transfers and discharges. Maintaining the critical
care census log.
d. Transcription of orders when other duties are complete.
e. Makes phone calls per staff request.
f. Utilizes appropriate chain of command for resolution of difficult issues.
g. Promotes smooth functioning of unit with adherence to policies and procedures.
h. Participates in orientation of new staff.
Unit/Department Responsibilities:
a. Maintains a neat, organized and safe environment.
b. Follow-up on Biomedical/Engineering requests.
c. Functions as a resource to visitors, physicians and staff, greeting them promptly and courteously
with eye contact and pleasant expression and tone of voice
d. Promotes a positive work environment as evidenced by:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Evidence of accuracy, neatness and legibility in work habits.
Demonstrates fluency in English language (written and verbal).
BCLS, Basic EKG course (Must pass EKG test)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires considerable walking, standing and moderate lifting.
Exposed to all patient elements.
Handles emergencies and critical patient incidents.
