Qwaltec is seeking a Mission Operations Engineer to provide ground system sustainment and operations support for the NASA NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) on GSMO 3 contract.


As part of our team, you’ll be asked to:

  • Become the Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for JPSS Mission Management (MM) software item
  • Evaluate, assess, and propose functional operability enhancements for MM
  • Support design and development reviews regarding future builds and capabilities for MM
  • Influence regression tests and associated artifacts to ensure operability for MM
  • Provide technical and operational feedback for future releases
  • Maintain situational awareness of operations as relates to mission planning
  • Review, assess, and propose edits or enhancements to operational tools and scripts in support of mission planning process for JPSS Supported missions (NPP, J1, & J2)
  • Participate in the Ground Project Discrepancy Report Board (DRB)
  • Ensure discrepancies are documented and addressed according to severity and priority
  • Track Discrepancy Reports (DRs) though the DR lifecycle to ensure timely delivery of fixes to operations
  • Validate fixes and recommend closure of DRs to the DRB Chairs
  • Review updates to operational products and processes to support operations
  • Mature MM Tasks for use in operations
  • Present test results and artifacts to end customer for review and approval
  • Ensure the data integrity to future builds are completed to support mission requirements
  • Support Sprint Demos for MM to assess functionality and operability of proposed software changes
  • Provide feedback on DR priorities to MM developers via Sprint Demos, quarterly Planning Increment Meetings and Program Monthly Reviews
  • Develop and execute Functional Check Out (FCO) test procedures against ops simulators for current missions (NPP, J01, & J2)
  • Develop and execute FCO test Procedures for follow-on missions (J3 & J4) in coordination with Mission Readiness team
  • Provide technical analysis of simulated and operational data to verify functionality of future releases
Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Space Systems)
  • Previous experience with satellite operations, specifically mission planning, preferably on NASA or NOAA programs (preferred)
  • Experience using mission planning and scheduling tools such as MM (JPSS) or STK (preferred)
  • Experience using configuration management tools and services such as SharePoint and JIRA (preferred)
  • General understanding of weather products produced from Polar satellites (preferred)
  • Familiarity with analysis software, such as Matlab and Simulink (preferred)
  • Good awareness of satellite operations
  • Good awareness of orbital mechanics
  • Good ability to grasp and apply new information quickly
  • Good ability to handle more complex assignments as experience progresses
  • Shows initiative on assignments, and professionally executes projects with little direction
  • Clear understanding of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
