Job Summary
The Minister for Congregational Care andOlder Adults at The Riverside Church is an experienced leader and energetic motivator with a heart for care that transforms individuals, systems, and structures. In collaboration with senior leadership, they will lead the planning and facilitation of a comprehensive pastoral care program for The Riverside Church community. This leader will work closely with and serve as a resource to the Senior Minister, clergy team, lay leaders, and the church’s various care ministries to ensure timely and appropriate spiritual care for members along every step of life’s journey. With a vision that honors the diverse generations within the church, they will provide focused leadership for the programs and initiatives that support Riverside’s Older Adult Ministries. Additionally, they will offer pastoral guidance for the work of welcoming and integrating new members.
Essential Functions of Position:
- Serves as staff liaison to the Membership, Care, and Parish Life Commission, providing direction to the ministries under the MCPL banner including:
- Memorial Society and Columbarium in partnership with the Worship Commission
- Spiritual Retreats in partnership with the Education Commission
- Tower League (Older Adult Ministry)
- Art of Movement
- New Member Classes
- Pastoral Care
- Business and Professional Women
- Tai Chi
- Knitting Club
- Others as may be determined
- Serves as staff liaison to the Congregational Care Committee and/or other lay pastoral ministries.
- Provides education and formation for the church on topics of care, life cycle, and aging that promote healing, spiritual growth, and transformative change within individuals and the church community.
- Leads programming for Older Adults.
- Coordinates clergy and laity for member care needs and initiatives inside and outside the walls of the church.
- Supervises staff and members of the MCPL ministries: Hire, support and evaluate staff, participants, and programs to ensure fiscal and programmatic alignment.
- Plans and oversees the MCPL budget.
- Develops and sustains community partnerships both to offer spiritual resources to the broader community and to strengthen Riverside’s access to a larger network of care resources and referrals.
- Maintains the Sunday Prayer List.
- Ensures sick and/or bereaved members receive timely and ongoing outreach from the church.
- Works with the Worship Department to plan and officiate the annual Hope and Consolation Service (or equivalent) and other care-centered worship experiences.
- Provides guidance for the new members’ ministry related to theological, ecclesial, or pastoral issues.
Parish Ministry and Staff:
- Serves as a full member of the clergy team with general pastoral duties including weddings, funerals, worship leadership, and other pastoral/sacramental offices.
- Participates fully in clergy and senior staff meetings and encourages collaborative ministry with staff and leadership team.
- Serves with the Senior Minister in interpreting and sharing the vision for Care and healing with the larger community.
- Serves as resource to clergy staff in integrating Care and Older adult care throughout the Riverside Church.
- Fosters healthy relationships with both staff and members through collaboration and consultation.
- Assists in creating and carrying out the plan for short and long-term priorities, and ensures alignment of MCPL ministry with the church’s goals.
- Attends Council meetings and makes reports on an “as needed” basis. Serves as needed on staff and clergy committees.
- Provides occasional preaching, teaching, and social media contributions.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ordination in a denomination that is a member of the National Council of Churches.
- Master of Divinity degree required
- Understanding of the theological foundations of the call to support one another’s wholeness and wellbeing.
- Experience in program development and leadership.
- A proven ability to develop effective community-based programs and to cultivate meaningful relationships within communities, including partnerships with the public and private sectors.
- Experience in a congregation or an organizational setting with a multi-cultural membership and a diverse staff.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to interact in a collaborative manner with other ministries and staff.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Slack, and other collaboration and communication software.
- Experience managing budgets and drafting best practice and department policy guidelines.
Mental demands/physical demands:
Candidate must have an articulable spiritual practice and grounded faith. They must be self-motivated, organized, and flexible with an ability to prioritize workload and adjust to changing church needs. Work equally well independently and as part of a team. Position involves weekend work and the candidate is expected to work primarily on-site at the Riverside Church.
