Position Summary
This posting will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technician positions focusing on Mineral Resources at Oregon State University.
These Student Technicians will perform a wide variety of mineralogical tasks at OSU including inventorying, organizing, and labelling geologic rock samples collected from McDermitt Caldera in eastern Oregon/northern Nevada. Both positions involve varying amounts of field sampling and analytical/laboratory work - one position will focus on mineralogy/geochemistry, and the other position will focus on mineralogy/geochronology.
The work will require some sustained physical effort (i.e., frequent moving of rock samples), an ability to use hand tools (i.e. sieves) and simple power equipment (i.e., operating a rock crusher), an ability to describe rocks in hand sample and in thin section (via petrographic microscope). The student employee will be trained, supervised, and assigned tasks by geology faculty.
Position learning/experience outcomes include familiarity with basic principles of mineralogy and sample management - integrating sampling methods, data documentation, rock processing procedures, and the importance of data integrity. The student employee will have the opportunity to get involved with educational activities and/or a research project with an option to present findings at a university research symposium.
Position Duties
  • Be able to conduct field geology studies and sample collection at off-campus field sites for 3-10 day periods during academic year or summer.
  • Have completed coursework in mineralogy, petrology, and petrography, and be able to use a petrographic microscope.
