Summary:

The licensed clinical Adult Counselor positions have the primary responsibility of providing short term, non-medical counseling and outreach to military service members and their families in Alaska. This includes individual, couples, group counseling, as well as briefings and presentations and 'walk-around' counseling to decrease the stigma often associated with counseling.

 

We are currently seeking qualified Adult Counselor to support the Military and Family Life Counseling (MFLC) program in Alaska. MFLC Adult Counselors provide services to military service members and their families to increase their ability to develop strong relationships, stress management, adequately express and manage their emotions and helps participants learn to anticipate and resolve unique challenges associated with military life. Other issues typically include marital problems, parenting, grief and loss, adjustment issues related to PSC'ing and deployments. These services aid in preventing or reducing the effects of stressors that may detract from Military and Family readiness.

 

Additionally, Adult Counselors provide proactive outreach to service members and their families via walk-around counseling. Counselors work closely with military branch points of contact (POCs) to ensure that program services are provided within the scope of the contract and meet the needs of the assigned installation. 

 

 

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Providing face-to-face, short-term, non-medical counseling to military service members and their families.
  • Making appropriate referrals and handoffs to Military and community resources, as needed. 
  • Using approved training and materials to provide presentations / briefings to individuals and groups.
  • Providing referral resources to participants who need a greater level of care or to those that are not eligible for the MFLC program.
  • Providing outreach services to parents and the installation command staff.
  • Communicating information regarding trends and issues at assigned installation to supervisors.
  • Participating in regular in-service training, quality improvement committees, or other contract activities as assigned.
  • Submitting Activity forms daily, to show 8 hours of direct daily contact.
  • Reporting time daily for employer and government. 
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience using short term, solution focused counseling techniques.
  • Working knowledge of relevant military, state, federal, and local laws and resources.
  • A thorough understanding of the military lifestyle and experience working with military family members.
  • Ability to understand, apply, and maintain professional standards.
  • Highly developed written, oral, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Proficient in iPhone, iPad and other APPLE technology/products.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensure at the independent practice level (LCSW, LMFT, LPC LCPC, LMHC) in the State where position is located and where the services are rendered. (Alaska for this position).
  • Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field such as social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling.
  • Ability to pass all background/suitability checks, including CNACI security clearance.
  • Fluency in the English language.
  • A valid driver's license; ability to travel locally as needed.
  • Willing to travel 10% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFLC experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Ability to interact with military members during routine unit activities, such as physical training and military exercises.
