Westtown School seeks a full-time Middle School Math and Technology Innovation teacher to begin in August 2024. The Middle School Math and Technology Innovation teacher works as an effective member of both a cohort of Middle School math teachers and a grade-level team while collaborating with math teachers across the school. The full-time teaching responsibility consists of teaching three year-long math classes and a new Technology Innovation elective course.
Utilizing the Big Ideas Math curriculum, Westtown empowers students to think critically, work collaboratively, and become change-makers. Through our research-based, student-centered curriculum, students identify and build mathematical connections with the world and develop proficiency to solve increasingly complex problems. In addition to teaching three levels of math, the Middle School Math and Technology Innovation teacher will design and lead a new semester-long technology innovation elective.
The Middle School Math and Technology Innovation teacher serves as a member of the core Middle School team. Core responsibilities include advising, supervision of study halls and recesses, chaperoning field trips, and related activities that contribute to the Middle School community and the educational experience of our students. In addition, the Middle School Math and Technology Innovation teacher will lead or assist in two seasons of co-curricular sports or other student-centered activities. The successful candidate will be a motivated educator with strong content knowledge and a keen interest in working with Middle School students.
Westtown School is an independent, Quaker co-educational, pre-K to 12, college preparatory day and boarding school located in suburban West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia. Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach three sections of Middle School math (6th grade Math, 7th grade Math, and Algebra 1) and one Technology Innovation elective;
- Integrate technology to enhance instruction and engagement with students;
- Develop culturally competent and responsive lessons and learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
- Contribute to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a program that reflects diverse cultures and perspectives;
- Differentiate lessons, where appropriate, to ensure that all students can access the curriculum; use multiple methods of assessment to evaluate student learning;
- Actively involve students in the classroom through student-centered lessons, group work, project-based and/or inquiry-based learning;
- Supervise/facilitate divisional duties (e.g., study hall, recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal);
- Communicate effectively with all constituents - students, colleagues, administrators, and parents;
- Enthusiastically seek out and participate in both school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader and community member.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred;
- A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant classroom teaching experience; preferably working with Middle School students;
- A collaborative approach to teaching and learning;
- A commitment to meeting the unique academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs of Middle School students;
- Familiarity with Google products and the integration of a learning management system, Canvas, into best teaching practices;
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
- A strong character with a team-oriented spirit, and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
- A strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an appreciation for Quaker values and how these inform community processes (meeting structures, decision-making, student discipline, etc.) and interactions.
