Job description

Eastern Mennonite School
MS Girls Basketball Coach Job Description
EMS Mission Statement: Eastern Mennonite School joins home and church in calling students to faith in Jesus Christ, academic excellence, personal integrity, and compassionate service in the world.
EMS Vision Statement: Eastern Mennonite School aspires to reflect Christ's light as a learning community where every student belongs, thrives, and lives God's call.
The Athletic Department supports the mission and vision of EMS and strives to employ coaches that will create a team environment that furthers the mission and vision of the school.
As a coach at Eastern Mennonite School, you will be evaluated each year based on the following:

  • Creating a team environment that puts value on players deepening their relationship with Christ and others, rather than just winning.
    • Coaches are required to provide the opportunity and space for players to lead devotions and prayer before games and practices
    • Coaches are also expected to lead devotions and prayer throughout the season

  • Planning and executing well organized practices that are focused on fitness, skill development and game understanding
    • Players should be pushed physically and mentally, but never past what is safe for their age and developmental level

  • Treating players, families, opponents and officials with respect, dignity and grace.
    • Athletics are an opportunity for players to learn about themselves, take chances, make mistakes and learn life lessons. Players should be able to trust that their coaches understand this.
    • Families are putting their trust in you. You are playing an important role in the development of their child, and for no reason should they question that your intentions are anything less than the best for their child
      • This does not mean they will agree with every decision you make, but they will hopefully see that you have the good of the team in mind when you make tough decisions
    • Opponents should be treated with the same respect you treat your own team
    • Officials, whether you feel they are doing a good job or not, will be treated with respect. They are doing the best can, and you need to be a positive example of how you are treating them, even if a call does not go your way.
    • Coaches are required to stay at school until ALL of your players are picked up from practice. If you cannot stay, you need to make arrangements for someone else to stay with players who are waiting for rides.

  • Support decisions and policies of the Athletic Department, Athletic Director and EMS
    • During your season, 1-2 meetings will be setup with the Athletic Director to talk about any concerns you may have, as well as talk about the following:
      • Steps you are taking to create a team environment that supports the mission and vision of EMS and the Athletic Department.
      • How are your players responding at the current state of the season
      • In what ways are you developing players on the bench, as well as the role players and starters?
      • Reflect on challenges as well as bright spots for you and the team
    • No purchases can be made for teams without the approval of the Athletic Director
    • Coaches are responsible for creating a spreadsheet that outlines the season charges for each individual athlete. These spreadsheets should be turned in immediately after the season has ended.
      • A spreadsheet template can be given to a coach at their request
      • All shirts, warm-up jackets/pants, shorts and socks (soccer), bags etc are charged to Student accounts. These items are billed to families at the end of each season.
      • If you find a sponsor for a specific shirt, bring that to the Athletic Director and they will work with the Advancement Department on getting those funds to your dedicated account so students will not be charged for that specific item.
    • Warm-up music can be a variety of Christian and Non-Chrisitan music. The messages of the songs should not be against the mission of EMS. All player created playlists need to be approved by the Athletic Director before they are given to PA/Scoreboard Operator. Teams need to give a playlist to the AD at least 2 weeks prior to their first game/match.
      • Music played in practice also needs to not be against the mission of EMS.
    • As a school sponsored extracurricular activity, language athletes and coaches use in practices and games are held to the same standard as during the school day.
      • For more information see the Student Handbook
    • Coaches are expected to help setup/tear down after games as needed. A team of people makes this go quickly.

  • Practice times need to be approved by the Athletic Director before sent out to families
    • Practices will not begin before 3:35pm to ensure that athletes have time to participate in Orchestra/Band, attend Math Lab, or meet with a teacher
      • The exception to this is Wednesdays, when practice can begin at 3:15, if you are an indoor team, to maximize gym time because of the 6pm ending time.
    • Practice on Wednesday ends at 6pm
      • There will be no team sponsored events after 6pm unless cleared with the Athletic Director
    • Middle School does not practice on Wednesday
  • Varsity teams are allowed to have one 3 hour practice during the week and one on the weekend, but these must be cleared with the Athletic Director.
  • Off-season Open Field/Open Gym/Off-Season workouts are permitted, but need to be approved by the Athletic Director.
  • Any Open Field/Open gym that will be held off-campus, or with athletes not enrolled at EMS needs to be approved by the Athletic Director.
  • The weight room is available for our teams and athletes, but it MUST be supervised by a coach. No athlete is allowed to use the weight room unsupervised.
  • The use of social media is accepted, but as an employee of EMS you are required to adhere to the school Social Media policy. (attached)
  • All VISAA Rules and Guidelines need to be followed.
  • When approached by a prospective student that has an interest in playing your sport, refer them to Admissions Director, Marsha Thomas, so they can begin the formal process of learning about EMS. You are expected to do your best to keep conversations about the school and the spiritual and academic environment we provide. If students come on an official visit, our Admissions Department will be sure to create a time where they can talk to you further about the vision of your specific sport.
  • See page 8 of the VISAA Rules and Guidelines
