Description
Colorado Academy seeks a full-time Middle School Dean of Students (Grades 6-8) for the 2024-2025 school year. The Dean will work closely with the Middle School Principal to oversee the day-to-day life of the Middle School students and work in partnership with Middle School teachers to support and guide students' character and social-emotional development. The Dean will help cultivate an inclusive community where all students feel seen and have a sense they belong. Key responsibilities include taking the lead on student discipline and enhancing Middle School student programs, including advisory, behavior policies, and social-emotional learning. The ideal candidate will be empathetic and grounded in a developmental understanding of Students ages 11-14, having experience working with and supporting a community of diverse backgrounds. They will have extensive experience working with Middle School students and have a deep respect for their intellectual and social-emotional development.
Colorado Academy Middle School
The Middle School program combines a strong academic curriculum with the care needed to grow students through the developmentally dynamic Middle School years. Teachers in the Middle School work to support students' growth as curious, kind, courageous, and adventurous leaders and learners, and students at CA benefit from small classes, high standards, robust arts and athletic offerings, and teachers' intentional effort to bring joy to daily school life. Learning at CA is not confined to the classroom. Students grow through our experiential interim program, outdoor education trips, clubs, service learning, and a plethora of field trips.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the Middle School Principal in all student matters.
  • Work in partnership with the Middle School Principal to cultivate a positive student culture in alignment with the school's mission.
  • Build trusting, supportive relationships with all school constituencies, including students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.
  • Lead student growth and discipline, incorporating restorative practices and school values while partnering with the Middle School Principal and counselor.
  • Communicate with the Middle School Principal, team leaders, teachers, advisors, the counselor, and parents as necessary regarding student issues and disciplinary situations.
  • Support Middle School faculty in classroom management and guide the approach to break/lunch supervision.
  • Lead faculty and staff in teaching and clarifying the school's expectations for behavior.
  • Serve on the Middle School Leadership Team (including grade-level leaders and the counselor).
  • Working with the grade level Team Leaders, the counselor, and the Middle School Principal, support the development of advisory programs, SEL, EF, inclusivity, Community and Culture programs, study hall, service-learning, and other initiatives adopted to support the emotional lives and well-being of our students.
  • Oversee student life and run and develop auxiliary programs to meet the student's needs, which may include:
    • Break times, recess equipment, and faculty duties
    • Clubs, Alliance, and Affinity Groups
  • In coordination with the Middle School Principal, develop new student programs as needed.
  • In coordination with the Middle School Principal, update school handbooks.
  • Support grade-level teams in creating advisory and outdoor education groupings.
  • School-wide responsibilities include recess and lunch supervision and grade level and faculty meetings.
  • Other responsibilities may include committee work, chaperoning outdoor education, field trips, and school socials, acting as an advisor, covering classes for absent teachers, and attending student performances and athletic events.
  • While there are no plans currently, the Dean may also teach one class.

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A credential or master's degree is preferred.
  • Two years of recent experience as a teacher, tutor, or coach is necessary.
  • Strong written communication skills and a sense of humor are essential.

The pay range for the position is $90,000-$110,000. Colorado Academy reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range. Any discrepancies that may exist do not relate to sex.
