The Role
This requisition has two MGR Engineering 2 openings for the Steering and Diving group and the Auxiliary Machinery and Vendor Support group. These are two SME groups in the Submarine Machinery Engineering Department (E14) which are responsible for all mechanical engineering duties associated with their respective components on multiple submarine platforms. Candidates who interview will be considered for both positions.
General duties for each group include:
  • Provide technically sound engineering solutions to problems from a multitude of customers to support submarine new construction and overhaul efforts at NNS and various other private and public shipyards.
  • Solutions consider the 4 pillars of operational success: safety, quality, cost, and schedule.


The supervisor is responsible for:
  • Ensuring quality products are produced in a timely manner to support program objectives
  • Organizing and reporting status for tasks in the group
  • Mentoring and supporting staff members to maximize effectiveness in all areas (technical and administrative)
  • Leading by example to instill a professional, engaged and accountable culture in staff


Steering and Diving:
  • Subject matter expertise in:
    • Steering and Diving
      • control surfaces
      • hydraulic actuators
      • operating gear
      • feedback linkages
    • Mast and antennas including snorkel
      • hydraulic actuators
      • alignment & dimensional control
    • SPU, Hydraulic vent and supply tanks


Auxiliary Machinery and Vendor Support:
  • Subject matter expertise in:
    • Towed array systems and floating wire antennae
    • countermeasure launchers
    • torpedo ejection systems
    • trash disposal unit, trach compactor
    • mooring capstan
    • anchor handling system
  • Vendor software coordination
    • Track, distribute, collect all dept vendor software items (VIRs, VPARs, QNs, etc.)


Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
  • A full working knowledge of Fleet Support and VCS procedures and practices
  • Have a substantial understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles and how they apply to shipbuilding
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage their team effectively to ensure project completion on time and with appropriate technical rigor applied
  • Demonstrate the ability to interface intelligently with Electric Boat, trades, suppliers, management and the customer
  • Have a working knowledge of all shipyard operations including material procurement, structural fabrication, component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting, and the relationship between the four
  • Communicate clearly and effectively and demonstrate strong technical writing skills
