Position Summary:

Execute strategic direction across a group of Business Owner's Insurance underwriting teams with a focus on profitable growth, service excellence and sound underwriting. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead a team of Commercial Underwriting leaders to achieve departmental goals. Responsible for executive product line objectives to minimize the indemnity and expense impact on the combined ratio, increase profitability, achieve service excellence and maintain compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Leverage people, technology and processes to drive innovation within team. Identify opportunities to move team forward while still embracing Mercury’s fundamental underwriting core.
  • Proactively execute underwriting strategy by applying data/reporting, market knowledge and experience to identify opportunities and develop efficient processes.
  • Balance risk management with the desire for short and long term strategic growth potential across team. Partner effectively with product and sales/marketing to maximize profitable results for product line.
  • Oversee strong agency relationships within region and ensure service excellence standards are upheld.
  • Responsible for recruitment, retention, performance management, employee motivation, morale, staff development and talent management within assigned team
  • Delivers continuous feedback and coaching, and rewards and recognizes employees, to reinforce desired behaviors.  Initiates and conducts performance management of employees as needed.
  • Evaluates staff to identify skills and training needs; creates opportunities to expand roles to match employee strengths or address weaknesses. Identifies and selects top talent for the organization.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • CPCU or CIC preferred

Experience:

• 5+ years working in Commercial Lines underwriting leadership position 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proven ability to develop relationships and drive results within Underwriting
  • Ability to communicate and persuade at all levels of management and thrive in a cross-functional environment.
  • Must have proven leadership abilities, a track record in developing staff and dedication to mentoring staff
  • Ability to execute strategic plans effectively
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) and ability to learn new technology quickly
  • Proven ability in leveraging data insights to improve business results
  • Intellectual and analytical curiosity
  • Self-motivated critical thinking with an ability to execute 
  • Proven skill at balancing technical knowledge with business acumen
  • Knowledge of industry changes, legal updates and technical developments related to the insurance industry to proactively respond to changing business environment. 
  • Ability to recognize, understand and analyze the “big picture” when making decisions that involve underwriting and insurance operations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead self and others through change.
