Job Summary:
To provide management and administration of Center for Comparative Research activities and space requirements in accordance with applicable federal, state, and institutional laws, regulations, and policies.
Education & Experience
Meet the requirements of Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Certifications, Licenses OR Registration Required: LATG certification; prefer some type of managerial certification such as Institute for Animal Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM) or Certified Manager Animal Resources (CMAR).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of animal husbandry and the biology of common animal species. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards for the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research, education, and testing. Organizational skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to manage time and resources. Ability to perform basic supervisory functions. Ability to relay technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and manages the daily animal care operations and activities of the Center for Comparative Research. Assures compliance with applicable federal, state, and institutional laws, policies, and regulations governing the care and use of animals used in biomedical research.
  • Devises and implements plans to ensure accurate assignment of animals and maximize cage and space utilization; coordinates required maintenance needs.
  • Collaborates with the director in the establishment and implementation of short-and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and implements changes as necessary.
  • Maintains records in accordance with applicable regulations; compiles information for use in departmental budget planning.
  • Implements training programs for subordinates in the care, appropriate use, handling, and maintenance of laboratory animals used in research, education, and/or testing.
  • Promotes Safety of the CCR Staff.
  • Forecasts space allocation of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures and supports that the CCR Supervisor Regulatory Requests are carried out.
  • Structure Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Supervises employees to include work allocation, training, evaluation, and problem resolution. Promotes continuous improvement in work place safety, environmental, and/or infection control practices.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, frequent crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, constant reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
