Sun Prairie Utilities is seeking a Limited Term Employment Meter Reader to join its team. This position is expected to last 2 years, as the utility completes its Advanced Metering Infrastructure project. The desired applicant will read both electric and water meters; up to 19 hours per week, some flexibility with hours on assigned routes in all weather conditions.
Qualified candidates must be able to work independently outdoors at a fast pace while maintaining high numerical entry accuracy.
Essential Job Functions
- Enters or collects accurate usage readings from electric and water meters on assigned routes.
- Verifies that all services are accounted for on all completed routes.
- Report to respective customers and customer service department any meters that are inaccessible to read.
- Visually inspects meters to assure proper operation and report any perceived defects.
- Check to determine consistency of meter readings.
- Performs initial/final billable meter readings resulting from customers moving into and out of properties.
- Always cares for vehicle(s) by regularly cleaning, plus reporting and scheduling maintenance related items.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
- Delivers customer notices and/or drops mail off at local Post Office.
Requirements of Work
- Knowledge of the geography and street locations of the city.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Abilities needed include keen vision, legible writing, and accurate numerical keypad entry.
- Ability to walk continuously throughout each and every work day.
- Ability to communicate and maintain a good working relationship with customers, the public, management, and fellow employees.
- High School diploma or the equivalent combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed above.
- Ability to read and analyze technical data and procedures
- Ability to make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- Knowledge and experience with personal computers or hand held electronics is preferred.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License with a good driving record.
- Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.

- Work is primarily performed in field. Employee must be able to navigate quickly through all types of rough terrain and obstacles associated with meter reading. Brisk walking is required throughout a majority of every work day.
- The employee will be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat and cold weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
- Employee may encounter aggressive dogs and other domestic and wild animals.
