Summary/Objective Responsible for the accurate reading of water meters (either by hand recording or hand-held computer input). Re-checks of readings upon high billings, installations and removals of water meters, connections and disconnections of water meters, digging out of meters when covered by dirt as necessary. Clean, repair and test water meters as necessary. Daily contact with the public.
Essential Functions
- Accurately read water meters and record readings on hand-held computer or by writing in meter books.
- Input of new accounts in meter reading computer.
- Make water meter connects and disconnects for water services as required.
- Inspect maintain, replace install or remove water meters as required.
- Respond promptly to emergency call-outs by phone, pager, or 2-way radios.
- Assist in repair of water line breaks.
- Handle initial response to customer complaints and refer to supervisor as necessary. Properly document all information regarding complaints.
- Follow proper procedure for connects, disconnects, and repairs
- Must have an active phone at all times and be willing to work overtime, holidays and weekends.
- Ability to learn the geography of the area and assigned routes.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Able to work independently
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Conditions This position primarily works outdoors, in all types of extreme weather, and in potentially hazardous environments. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. This position is very fast paced and requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. This position requires the repetitious task of driving vehicle and walking to each meter, reading 300 – 600 meters per day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items 10-50 pounds.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of experience as a Meter Reader.
- Bilingual English / Spanish (speak, read and write).
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
- Must have, or be able to obtain within a year “D” TCEQ Distribution License
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license- Class C
