Summary of Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for ensuring steel supplier quality conforms to OEM specifications, to address all corrective actions, and recovery of defective materials. The metallurgist / senior Quality Engineer will need to have a strong knowledge in steel, materials, and steel processing. Responsible for lead role in development and maintenance of APQP, PPAP, and IATF 16949 documentation. Lead role in preparation and maintenance of process inspection instructions, reports, and quality alerts
Initiate continual improvement efforts; to include lean manufacturing, process error proofing, CPK improvement, problem solving and resolution, and assistance in providing timely reaction to concerns. Assist in the design, development, and approval of checking aids and fixtures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Must be able to technically assess performance aspects of steel and steel processing.
  • Must be knowledgeable in steel, material and steel processing.
  • Must be able to determine steel formability and assess and analyze the same.
  • Maintain a positive contribution towards quality, customer satisfaction and company profitability.
  • Understands and can implement prototype, tooling and die shop requirements prior to full production needs.
  • Responsible for the identification and development of supplier services and new sources of supply. On-site supplier may be required.
  • Participate in value analysis/ engineering teams.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings, plant meetings, and training; participate in customer visitations as designated by the Quality Assurance Manager
  • Support new program launches and customer expectations
  • Provide reports as required by the Quality Assurance Manager
  • Work closely with production staff on cost savings ideas.
  • Certify and approve quality levels of purchased products.
  • Setup / maintain metallurgical testing process and procedures.
  • Perform metallurgical testing of materials and products.
  • Oversee the day to day operations of the material metallurgical test lab.
  • Responsible for interface with customers/vendors as it relates to plant operations.
  • Must have a good understanding of steel mill and original equipment manufacturer specifications and capabilities.
  • GD&T, use of measuring devices, checking aids / fixtures, computer applications, mechanical testing, customer and ISO-IATF 16949 requirements
  • Basic knowledge of steel phase transformation and steel conversion, steel making techniques
  • Experience in quality lab practices/procedures
  • Understanding of basic steel property measuring techniques: tensile, micro hardness, acid bath, etc.
  • Ability to create testing plans, reporting and master documentation archives
  • Understanding of measuring and testing parameters for evaluating joining techniques of steels (weld types and quality)
  • Able to prepare, read, write, and interpret written reports, procedures, instructions and guidelines
  • Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, associates, suppliers and customers
  • Work on projects, reports and contribute various studies as required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced level mathematical, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Train other employees as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of how job performance affects product quality and customer satisfaction
  • Able to prepare, read and interpret written reports, instructions, procedures and guidelines
  • Able to read technical drawings, layout and fixture drawings and CAD data
  • Able to effectively communicate with management, employees, suppliers and customers
  • Knowledge of customer and IATF 16949 requirements
  • Knowledge of automotive fabrication processes
  • Knowledge of Advanced Product Quality Planning methods
  • Advanced body shop build variation analysis skills
  • Extensive heat treating & welding knowledge from Quality and reliability aspect
  • Advanced knowledge of B.I.W. assembly process
  • Advanced stamping knowledge regarding B.I.W. components
  • Experience managing daily launch event issues and supporting actions
  • Experience in High Level customer liaison role
  • Able to maintain confidentiality, and use discretion and tact
  • Able to manage and schedule multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Able to work shift rotation
  • Able to work flexible hours and overtime
  • Able to work various locations within and outside the plant
  • Physically capable of repetitively lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to calculate figures and amounts, such as percentages and proportions
  • Able to use computer and software as required

  • Able to work well with others, build and maintain positive employee relations

Education and Experience
  • University Degree - Preferred in Metallurgy or Material Science or combination of education and experience.
  • Non-degreed consideration given with five plus years of experience in metallurgical testing and analysis
  • One year heat treat experience with formal education or five plus years of experience without formal education
  • Five plus years experience as a Quality Engineer.

Work Environment
  • Work environment is primarily manufacturing plant floor
  • Work environment also includes metallurgical test lab.
  • Customer visits as needed.
  • The individual must be able to perform all essential functions as appropriate on the plant floor, in meetings, and with employees, management, customers and suppliers
  • Overtime as required
