The qualified candidate will act as an Engineer and Principal Investigator to perform research and testing efforts focused on bringing new technologies, processes, and methods to the natural gas/energy industry. The individual will participate in research and testing efforts with the natural gas industry as well as support cross-cutting research in the areas of hydrogen and renewable energy related projects.

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. While local candidates are preferred, GTI Energy provides relocation assistance for the right candidate. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.
Perform research and development on projects and initiatives for the Research & Engineering group at GTI Energy. Provide general support on corrosion and metallurgical topics as related to gas pipelines. This includes receiving assignments as a principal investigator and working independently or as part of a team. Project execution includes research focused on failure analysis of metallic pipeline components, and hydrogen embrittlement. The position will require engagement with project sponsors for project reporting and project proposal stages. Below is a high-level overview of some of the primary responsibilities:
- Work in research areas related to gas piping systems, material testing, corrosion modeling and failure analysis
- Apply engineering or basic science knowledge and testing techniques to solve customer’s problems
- Plan and perform mechanical testing of metallic materials used in gas distribution systems
- Operate test instruments for measurement of material properties and destructive testing
- Operate optical and electron microscopes for microstructure, elemental, corrosion, and fracture analysis
- Assist in the development of material testing protocols and forensic failure investigations
- May also provide technical direction to subordinate staff such as technicians and collaborate with peers
- Work independently on engineering problems and be capable of conducting work requiring independent judgement and evaluation
- Lead and/or assist in the development of project proposals
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Fundamental knowledge in the areas of mechanical engineering and related engineering fields
- Familiarity with metal chemistry and microstructure
- Familiarity with metal corrosion processes
- Experience with testing of metallic materials
- Hands-on skills in a laboratory environment
- Familiarity with instrumentation, measurement, and test methods
- Familiarity with failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Technical ability to interpret test and analysis results and articulate them in writing
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Abilities to communicate well orally and in writing, and work effectively as a team/project member are necessary
- Minimum of a Masters of Science in an engineering or science-related field
- Minimum of 3 – 5 years of relevant R&D and/or consulting/engineering experience
- Experimental research experience is a plus
- Experience in mechanics of materials is a plus
- Natural gas pipeline experience is a plus
