Job Title: In-Class Bilingual Mentor
Location: Houston Independent School District (HISD)
Duration: 10 weeks, Monday-Thursday, 6 hours per day
Position Summary:
The In-Class Bilingual Mentor will work closely with teachers in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to provide support to students who are non-native English speakers, particularly those who primarily speak Spanish or Pashto. The mentor will assist in facilitating communication, understanding, and engagement for these students within the classroom environment, promoting their academic success and overall integration into the school community.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct support to students who are non-native English speakers, assisting them in understanding instructions, assignments, and classroom activities.
- Facilitate communication between teachers and students by interpreting and translating instructions, announcements, and other educational materials from English to the target language (Spanish or Pashto) and vice versa.
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to develop strategies and techniques for effectively engaging non-English-speaking students in the learning process.
- Assist in the creation of supplementary educational materials in the target language to reinforce classroom lessons and promote comprehension.
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions for students who require additional assistance with English language acquisition or academic subjects.
- Serve as a cultural liaison between non-English-speaking students and the broader school community, helping to foster understanding, respect, and inclusivity.
- Collaborate with other school staff, including counselors, administrators, and support personnel, to address the specific needs and challenges of non-English-speaking students.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and other relevant data to inform instructional decisions and support services.
Qualifications:
- Fluency in English and Spanish or English and Pashto (both written and verbal) is required.
- Previous experience working with English language learners or in a multicultural educational setting is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with students, teachers, and parents from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to the needs of non-English-speaking students and their families.
- Flexibility, patience, and adaptability in responding to the dynamic needs of students and the school environment.
