BLOOMBERG ARTS INTERNSHIP MENTOR


What We Do  

Sitar Arts Center engages DC youth, from early childhood to young adulthood, in building a creative community of learning and belonging that removes financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training.  We envision a city in which all young people experience transformative moments through quality, accessible arts education and career training and are supported on their path to discover their creativity and achieve their full potential.


At Sitar Arts Center, students engage in affordable, high-quality education and workforce development in the visual, digital, and performing arts. Each semester, 80% of students are from Washington DC households at 60% or less of the area median income. Programs take place year-round during out-of-school time in Sitar's state-of-the-art facilities, which feature an 85-seat theater, visual and digital art studios, a dark room, dance studios, and private and ensemble instrumental music studios.


Located in the vibrant Adams Morgan neighborhood, Sitar's community includes youth from every ward in DC. Across the year, up to 900 students engage in high quality classes including instrumental music, ballet and hip-hop dance, acting and musical theater, digital photography and filmmaking, and more. Each summer children from K- 8th grade enjoy our full day, 6-week Camp Sitar and teens enroll in summer workforce development programs. Sitar's new ArtsAdvance program offers alternative pathways to careers in the creative industries for 18-24-year-olds.


What You’ll Do    

As a Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) Mentor, you will work with the Innovation and Engagement Team to monitor and support a portion of the Bloomberg Arts Interns during 7 weeks of the summer.


BAI Mentors will build relationships with their interns, monitor intern attendance and schedules, support interns end of program presentations, and serve as a point of contact for interns and their host site supervisors.


BAI Mentors work closely with the Senior Manager of Youth Workforce Development and key program facilitators in planning and implementing in-person programming and sessions. You will assist with administrative aspects of the BAI internship and student data, working closely with Sitar Staff, interns and their families to ensure strong communication and management of important information.


Responsibilities Include  


  • Mentor interns through an early job experience
  • Assist in the planning, leading and support of intern workshops and activities, including preparation, set up, clean up and the maintenance of equipment and materials
  • Support the management of intern behavior using modification techniques as approved by Sitar (including Restorative Justice Practices) and assist with family communication when needed
  • Assist in attendance and student data tracking
  • Provide appropriate supervision for individual and groups of teenaged interns during program hours and maintain a safe and fun environment
  • Receive direction from the Senior Manager of Youth Workforce for planning and improvement


What You’ll Earn     

Pay is hourly, $24.00 - $25.00 per hour, based on experience.


When You'll Work   

This position is part-time seasonal starting May 20 and running through August 16, 2024. Programming typically runs in person on Mondays and Thursdays or Fridays from 9:30am – 6:00pm. Remote work will be required on certain days of the week based on need.


  • Part-time, up to 20 hours a week (8 hrs/wk: May 20- June 16 & Aug 12-16, up to 20 hrs/wk June 17-Aug 9)
  • In-person, a minimum of 2 days a week
  • Remote, 2 days a week


On select dates, evening events or later shifts may be required. A specific schedule will be available during interviews. Applicants must commit to the entire time period.

As a BAI Mentor, you have high standards of excellence and believe in setting an example as a leader. You work well in a team and have strong communication with your colleagues. You enjoy collaboration and innovation and believe strong relationship management is key to meaningful youth development. Families enjoy talking with you and interns connect easily with you.


Most importantly, you have a strong love for the arts and teens and believe everyone should have access to careers in the arts!


Key Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED and in pursuit of college degree or alternative career pathways.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with youth and/or families.
  • Interest and/or experience in arts and/or art education.
  • Strong relational engagement, communication, and organization skills.
  • 1-2 years practical experience within one or more art forms (i.e. visual arts, creative movement, dance, music, theater)


Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Bilingual - Spanish/English speaking, editing a plus
  • 1-2 years of instructional experience with teens
  • Knowledge, practice, and experience with differentiated instruction, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism
