Job Duties:  As a member of a multidisciplinary team and under the supervision of a qualified clinical supervisor, Mental Health practitioners/clinical trainees will learn how to and perform Mental Health screening, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, individual and group psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy, client psychoeducation, electronic client record documentation, multidisciplinary clinical consultation, coordination of services and referral.

Job Requirements:  The Mental Health Practitioner must be a graduate student in one of the Mental Health professional disciplines and is formally assigned by accredited college/university to an agency or facility for clinical training;  OR  Holds a masters or other graduate degree in one of the Mental Health professional disciplines from an accredited college/university (aka a “licensing candidate”; MS 244.462; Subd. 17).  A Mental Health practitioner working as a clinical trainee (aka “licensing candidate”) must additionally be actively pursuing clinical licensure in one of the areas listed in MS, section 245.462, subd. 18, clauses (1) to (6); The Practitioner must document these qualifications in their MnTC personnel file.   The Practitioner must comply with all requirements of MS 9505.0371 for being under Clinical Supervision. If the practitioner’s work functions are directly related to provision of co-occurring services, and are counted by the program towards co-occurring staffing ratios, the practitioner must be under the supervision of a licensed alcohol and drug counselor supervisor (MS 9530.6450, sub 4; Bulletin #14-51-01), in addition to the clinical supervisor. 

The clinical trainee’s clinical supervision experience helps the practitioner gain knowledge and skills necessary to practice effectively and independently and may include supervision of:

  • Direct practice
  • Treatment team collaboration
  • Continued professional learning
  • Job management

Mental Health Services: are provided by the Mental Health Practitioner under the supervision of a qualified clinical supervisor, the treatment director and with the guidance of a Mental Health Professional (if different from the Clinical Supervisor). 

  • Ensure that clients receive a standardized Mental Health screening;
  • If clients score positive on this screening, complete a diagnostic assessment (DA) within ten days of admission or immediately after 1st session whichever comes first; complete other diagnostics as indicated by the DA or required by third party payers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews that include a monthly review for each client; document monthly reviews for each client in a progress note and per documentation requirements.
  • Integrate diagnostic assessment into the Individual Treatment Plan which is subject to amendment until services to the client are terminated. The individual treatment plan must include treatment goals, specific methods to be used to address identified problems, resources to which the client is being referred, and client goals. Complete update of treatment plan before 2nd The ITP is reviewed at least once every 90 days, and revised as necessary.
  • Enter clinical charting after each treatment service. The progress notes must reference the individual treatment plan and link the specific service provided with a problem identified in the treatment plan.
  • Assist the completion of a discharge summary within five days of the client’s termination of services.
  • Ensure the content and format of client records be uniform and entries in each case are signed and dated.
  • Within your professional competency and, as authorized by your clinical supervisor, provide individual, group counseling, family psychotherapy, and client education strategies to avoid inappropriate chemical use and health problems related to chemical use, transition services, and services to address issues related to co-occurring mental illness.
  • Lead client education lecture classes as required.
  • Participate in the weekly treatment team meetings to review and update client progress notes.
  • Coordinate with the case manager regarding the treatment plan
  • Coordinate Mental Health services with other service providers as necessary to the treatment plan

Continuing Education and Training

  • Must have or obtain 12 hours of training in co-occurring Mental Health problems training within six months of hire; Attend and document 8 hours of co-occurring disorder training annually
  • Attend required in-house training and staff meetings and as directed by your clinical supervisor.

Other

  • Interns must maintain a copy of the current internship contract that is between the graduate degree program and the license holder’s program;
  • Licensing Candidates/Clinical Trainees personnel file must contain verification that the person has received a graduate or doctoral degree from an accredited school or educational program for one of the areas listed in Minnesota Statutes, section 245.462, subdivision 18, clauses (1) to (6);
  • Meet billable hours requirements as required by Supervisor; follow billing procedures
  • Insure that all necessary releases, Physician Communication Form, Notice of Privacy Practices form and the Financial Agreement are current (re-signed each year).
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet the definition of a Mental Health practitioner
  • Must be free of chemical use problems for at least the two years immediately preceding hire.
  • Ability to model a lifestyle that is in compliance with Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge’s Code of Conduct
  • Knowledge and understanding of implications of parts 9530.6405 to 9530.6505, 9543.1000 to 9543.1060, and Minnesota Statutes, chapter 245A, and sections 626.556, 626.557, and 626.5572.
  • Ability to successfully complete MN Dept of Human Services background study and psychotherapist background check (MS 604.20).
