Job description

Title: Medicine Horse Facilities Caretaker Internship 

*Candidate must be a Montezuma County Resident, age 16-18

Start/End Date: June 5, 2023 – July 27, 2023 

Hourly Pay: $13.65/hr 

Term:  10 weeks, Part time **We are looking for 2 candidates to work together, 20 hours/week each

Reports to: Medicine Horse Center Operations Manager 

Location:  Mancos, CO 

  

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission  

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.  

  

Program Overview:  

Medicine Horse Center is an equine-assisted therapy and social-emotional learning organization specializing in alternative outdoor educational, experiential, and therapeutic activities. We are a Colorado charitable 501(c)(3) not-for profit organization serving youth and adults of the Four Corners region. At Medicine Horse it is all about horses helping people. It is about developing relationships with some amazing animals and discovering your best self. 

 

The property consists of a 14-acre ranch in the Mancos Valley with 4 large paddocks that house 7 therapy horses, a garden space, multiple arenas, labyrinth, and a community room. The property needs upkeep especially throughout the busier summer months where facilities are utilized by local youth and adults. The individual’s main areas of focus will be general facility management, horse care and garden management. By maintain the appearance of the facility and the health of the garden plants the individual will help achieve the overarching goal of offering a safe and beautiful space, a sanctuary where healing, self-exploration, and connection can take place. 

 

Essential roles and responsibilities include

 

Facilities Maintenance 

  • Essential functions and responsibilities 
  • Assist with weed mitigation and overall tidiness of the facility 
  • Assist with projects that enhance or beautify the property 
  • Responsible tool use and maintenance  
  • Follow weekly property walk-through to identify areas for clean-up, weed mitigation, and enhancement 

Horse Care 

  • Daily feeding (requires being at the facility by 8:30 am daily) 
  • Daily cleanup of individual horse paddocks 
  • Grooming and bathing  
  • Regular upkeep of the feed and grooming buckets  
  • Hay handling 

Therapy Gardens Maintenance and Development 

  • Create, maintain, and follow a daily watering schedule  
  • Regular weed mitigation of all garden areas 
  • Proper maintenance of garden tools and garden tool area 
  • Divide and replant drought tolerant perennials 
  • Maintain adequate water levels of the Apollo Fountain 
  • Plant summer annual flowers and vegetables  
  • Assist with creative garden projects 

 

Desired Skills/Qualifications:  

  • Background or interest in ranching/horses 
  • Independent/ self-reliant/ dependable/ attentive to detail 
  • Comfort working outside in all weather conditions for an extended period (up to 2-4 hours)   
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Enjoys creative projects  
  • Good communication (verbal and written) skills 
  •  Willing to work part-time (Monday – Friday) 
  • Understanding and experience with horse care, behavior, etc. 
  • Experience working with youth ages 7-11 
  • Some garden experience 

 

Housing Provided:  No 

 

Training Provided:  

  • Horse safety  
  • Drip irrigation system 

 

Potential Environmental/Human Risks:  

  • Extended time outside in the sun 
  • Exposure to large animals 
  • Lifting gardening equipment up to 50 lbs. 

 

Requirements:  

  • Highschool student with reliable transportation 
  • U.S. Citizenship 
  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551 
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551 
  • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence 
  • A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
