Job description

Position Objective: Provide services as a Medicinal Chemist in support of the overall functions of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We seek an experienced Medicinal Chemist to join the Chemical Technologies group in Rockville, MD. The candidate will join a team of Medicinal Chemists, biologists, and computational scientists working on preclinical drug discovery programs that span target validation, hit-to- lead, and lead optimization space. This individual will impact programs in a role with a strong laboratory component, and will advance programs by solving difficult synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry challenges. The ideal candidate would demonstrate strong knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry methods, and must be a team player possessing strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize and optimize chemical probes for potency and solubility.

  • Perform chemical and biochemical reactions and appropriate analytical analyses.

  • Operate automated purification equipment (Biotage, etc.), LCMS and NMR instruments for compound characterization

  • Maintain up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments. Collect and review data; analyze and interpret data and results.

  • Produce research reports and communicate results.

  • Search chemical databases for journal articles, patents and related technologies.

  • Analyze samples using validated analytical methods for ongoing studies. Perform the total syntheses of target compounds. 5

  • Perform organic synthesis in support of the Medicinal Chemistry program.

  • Performs synthetic organic chemistry reactions that require heat, light or catalysis

  • Perform chemical and biochemical reactions and appropriate analytical analyses.

  • Prepare reagents and maintain an active inventory of all chemicals kept in the laboratory.

  • Devise synthetic routes to target molecules; produce 10-100 member libraries with acceptable purity and deliver quantities to support biological assays.

  • Independently design, synthesize and optimize chemical probes for potency and solubility.

  • Develop and present plans for novel syntheses and approaches to new compounds. 3

  • Carry out scale-up of the chemical probes of interest for additional studies. 4

  • Train junior laboratory staff in the design and execution of proper chemical/biochemical protocols.

  • Develop and document new procedures.

  • Participate in laboratory clean-up events and aid laboratory managers in organizing stock-rooms and bench areas.

  • Synthesize, purify and characterize target molecules.

  • Operates LCMS and NMR instruments to characterize organic compounds

  • Carry out scale-up of the chemical probes of interest for additional studies.

  • Maintain a comprehensive notebook and analytical data for each compound synthesized. 1

  • Interpret data; use evolving activity and data to design additional rebounds of analogs. 2

  • Contribute to publications and patent writing.

  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Monthly

  • Synthesize final target compounds for testing in biological assays - Weekly

  • Organize, analyze, and present trends in biological assay data (SAR trends) at team or group meetings – Monthly

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in chemistry.

  • Skilled in PowerPoint and ChemDraw.

  • Knowledge of organic synthesis, purification: normal-phase silica gel chromatography, reverse-phase HPLC, data analysis: analysis of structural-activity relationship (SAR) trends in biological assay data

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
