Job description

The Medication Aide - Certified (MA-C) is a certified nurse assistant who has successfully completed a training program approved by the State of Wyoming for medication administration, has an acceptable score on the written and clinical examination and has received certification as a Medication Aide. THe Legacy is committed to providing care that recognizes each resident's emotional, physical and spiritual needs beyond the traditional nursing procedures and protocols. The CMA reports to the Staff Nurse. Under the supervision of the Staff Nurse, the CMA administers medications as prescribed by the resident's physician and documents the administration, the medication effectiveness and any noted adverse actions or side effects of the medications in accordance with the established policies and procedures of their facility, current standards of practice and care and applicable state/federal regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Administers and accurately records the administration of medication for residents as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures of this facility
  • Observes, records and reports to the Staff Nurse symptoms and conditions of residents that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions or medication side effects
  • Determines and records effectiveness of medication in a timely and accurate manner as required by state and federal regulations
  • Provides and promotes residents rights during the administration of medications
  • Stores medications in a safe and accurate manner in accordance with established policies and procedures of this facility and applicable state and federal regulation
  • Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received into the facility, administered, at change of shift as required by policies and procedures of the facility and applicable state and federal regulations
  • Routinely inspects, cleans and monitors equipment and supplies to ensure resident safety. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Staff Nurse for correction or repair
  • Obtains, records and reports vital signs as indicated during the administration of medications.
  • Demonstrates awareness of proper infection control practice by using the Universal Precautions and following policies and procedures of this facility, including OSHA's Blood-borne Pathogen Standard
  • Communicates to residents, staff and others in an accurate and factual manner and seeks clarification from or refers to Staff Nurse when indicated.
  • Perform nursing skills that you have been deemed competent in by an RN
  • Demonstrate a passion for caring as evidenced by interaction with co-workers, residents, families, and visitors
  • Maintain and support a culture of compliance, ethics and integrity
  • Maintain confidentiality and rights of resident, family, employee, and facility information in compliance with PHI HIPAA policies and applicable regulations
  • Maintain safe work environment and exhibits safe work practices

OTHER DUTIES:
  • Attend care conferences as directed
  • Provide assigned showers
  • Assist in transporting residents to and from meals
  • Organize, label residents medical equipment
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Google and Microsoft operating system platforms
  • Administrative and clerical procedures; customer service
  • Must possess knowledge of safe medication administration techniques and demonstrate this knowledge with a medication error rate of 5% or below.
  • CMA must familiarize themselves with policies and procedures and demonstrate this knowledge during the performance of their duties
  • Must recognize complication, adverse reactions or side effects of medications and obtain input from the Staff Nurse as indicated to ensure the optimum health and safety of the resident
  • Must understand and practice resident confidentiality

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have successfully completed coursework and examination to obtain certification as both a Certified Nurse Assistant and Medication Aide - Certified
  • Must obtain continuing education if required by the state to maintain certification as a CMA and must provide evidence of continued certification to the facility in a timely and accurate manner

JOB TRAINING:
  • How long it usually takes to completely perform this job when the incumbent has the minimum knowledge, skills, ability, work experience and/or education: up to 6 months

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Works in all areas of the facility
  • Moves intermittently during working hours
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc.
  • Communicates with facility staff and department supervisors
  • May work beyond normal duty hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary
  • Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
  • Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without aide of medical devices)
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which may include a mental and physical examination

  • Works in facility and is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear
  • Must possess manual dexterity to handle delicate instruments and other equipment, and the ability to observe and report changes in a resident's clinical condition to the Staff Nurse
  • Must be able to obtain and record the resident's temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and /or lift a minimum of 40 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations
