Job Description

Perform testing for the clinical histocompatibility testing laboratory to support solid organ and bone marrow transplant programs at the University of Maryland, and other nationally recognized medical centers. The comprehensive clinical testing services require a rapid response on a 24-hour, 7 days per week basis. Perform automated and manual test procedures on blood and tissue samples to provide quality HLA test results. Adhere to explicit standard operating procedures and performs all duties in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements. Assist in the supervision of the laboratory.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

1. Ensure that clinical histocompatibility testing for transplant evaluations or other clinical purposes in the NHL is completed within the established turn-around-times. May communicate with external clients (nurse coordinators and Organ Procurement Organization coordinators) regarding on-call work-ups. Will perform independent, stat cadaver typing and crossmatch testing for solid organ transplant program on a 24-hour on-call basis.

2. Independently recognize and identify testing irregularities, equipment problems, errors and other potential problems that may adversely affect test performance or results in the absence of on-site supervision. Maintain accurate, complete and legible records. Identify discrepancies and verify documentation performed by other technologists and technicians. Review documentation for accuracy, validity and completeness. Notify appropriate supervisory staff.

3. Comply with all designated safety policies and procedures in the work area, including the use of applicable protective equipment when necessary to prevent exposure to potentially infectious agents.

4. Perform and accurately record required quality control procedures. Review test runs and verify test procedures are done in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Perform proficiency testing, validations and projects as required. Properly perform and document required preventative maintenance and calibration on lab equipment.

5. Prepare and evaluate reagents and quality control samples. Maintain inventory of reagents, equipment and supplies necessary for the performance of testing. Understand reagent stability and follow manufacturer recommended storage conditions.

6. Demonstrate knowledge in all procedures performed in the assigned departments. Participate in continuing education programs and training/retraining as necessary.

7. Understand and comply with applicable federal, state and local laws, American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), College of American Pathologist (CAP) and CLIA regulations. Adhere to quality assurance procedures and good manufacturing practices.

8. May be required to provide direct supervision for tasks performed by laboratory technologists and technicians. Assist in the training of new technologists and technicians. Completed work is evaluated for accuracy, validity and completeness by Lead Technologist, Laboratory Supervisor or Director of Testing prior to releasing test results of the job.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or related science required (degrees from foreign institutions will require credential equivalency evaluation). Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification desired.
  • Two years of Clinical Laboratory experience. Required to meet specific state requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand and perform complex procedures and techniques, work with complex instrumentation, interpret test results, and identify and correct discrepancies.
  • Skills required for proper specimen and reagent handling, labeling, processing, preparation, transportation and storage necessary.
  • Excellent customer service, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical, problem solving, and decision-making abilities necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently handle a high volume workload essential.
  • Must maintain high standard of performance during repetitious tasks.
  • Ability to promote cooperative work environment with laboratory staff. Basic computer skills necessary.
