Job description

The Reusable Medical Device (RMD) Coordinator is assigned to Sterile Processing Department (SPD ) functions as a member of the SPD service and provides support for all matters of concern relating to procedures for the decontamination, high-level disinfection (HLD), and/or sterilization of critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices and equipment storage of items reprocessed at Beckley VA Medical Center.
Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
  • Certification. None.
Experience and/or Education
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as Sterile Processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
c. Certification. None.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-07 (Advanced Level) - Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - RME Coordinator
(a) Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1.Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets.
3. In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others.
5. Ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds in order to assess the needs of the department.
6. Ability to coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.
7. Ability to interpret and apply Sterile Processing/infection prevention regulations and policies.
8. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment.
9. Ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in carrying out Sterile Processing functions.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with Sterile Processing Procedures.
Experience with the development of stand practice procedures and policies
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web based applications.
Dependable transportation

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-07.
Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting 30 pounds or more and pushing. Required to stand and move from one part of the room to another in performance of assigned duties and is also required to travel throughout the medical center observing the processes in placed in different services. Transferring objects may be required. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts, and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment. Use of ultrasonic equipment may require use of hearing protection. The RMD Coordinator is exposed, on a regular and recurring basis, to the residuals of the high-level disinfectant peracetic acid which has strong vinegar odor. Peracetic acid can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritant. Prolonged contact with skin may result in delayed burns. Breathing high concentrations of peracetic acid may cause nausea, vomiting, and irritation of nose, throat, and lungs. The MST/RMD COORDINATOR is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items, to cuts from both sterile and contaminated instruments, knife blades, sharps, and needles and dermatitis from frequent contact with cleaning agents.Education: IMPORTANT: A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
