Under the direction of the chief physicist and in collaboration with physicians, administrators, technologists, and others, the Medical Physicist is responsible for assuring diagnostic image quality and radiation dose optimization for all radiation imaging devices. The Medical Physicist stays abreast of imaging technology, completes or maintains board certification, and is accountable for all applicable documentation of duties performed.
The selected candidate can have an academic appointment on the clinical track in the Department of Imaging and will demonstrate continuous self-improvement, make effective contributions to sections, adhere to CSHS compliance plans, codes of conduct and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Summary of Essential Duties:
- Reviews and evaluates clinical protocols to assure the safe and optimal use of imaging devices.
- Conducts acceptance test on new equipment and timely physics survey for all radiation diagnostic imaging devices (mammography, nuclear medicine and PET included) and oversees the quality assurance program including ACR/ICA accreditation. Implements appropriate action as needed.
- Tracks radiation dose according and maintains compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies, and utilizes the results to improve clinical practice.
- Performs patient dose calculations from various imaging modalities as needed.
- Teaches radiology resident courses and provides lectures to physicians and technologists regarding imaging physics, safe use of imaging devices, image optimization and quality assurance and other topics as needed.
- Designs appropriate radiation shielding for site planning.
- Participates in application based imaging research. Submits abstracts to national conferences and publishes findings.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Medical Physics or related field required
- PhD in Medical Physics preferred
- Certification by American Board of Radiology (ABR) with ABR and MQSA certifications preferred but will consider candidates that are ABR eligible.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience with Diagnostic Imaging, Physics and/or Radiation Safety required
- 5 years of experience preferred
