Job Summary and Qualifications

Under general supervision, the Physicist provides physics support for the radiation oncology department in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Trident Health System. In collaboration with the physicians, chief Medical Physicist, director, dosimetry, radiation therapist and patients they evaluate and coordinate the treatment plans for radiotherapy. The physicist is also responsible for quality assurance of seed implant program, XRT treatment, SRS, SRT, HDR, LDR, quality assurance, attending radiation safety committee meetings and performs monthly calibrations on all treatment machines.

What you will do in this role: 

  • Participate in weekly conference, gathering charts, x-rays, and any other information concerning the patients in the treatment area. From conference relay information to treatment room personnel and instruct them in new procedures, programs, etc.
  • Weekly, check the charts to see that the radiation therapist and nursing staff have properly completed the chart work and supervises daily field positioning, etc.
  • Participate in generation of treatment programs and policies especially as these are affected by advice and capabilities and limitations of equipment and personnel in the treatment section.
  • Responsible for the ordering and shipment of radioactive materials, inventories of materials kept on hand and surveys of appropriate areas.
  • Assist in operating the CT, Simulator and all treatment rooms as necessary and calibrate all radiation therapy treatment machines on a monthly basis.
  • Evaluate and recommend major equipment purchases, interacting with the Radiation Oncologist and Director, Cancer Center and assist with long term budget acquisition requests for major capital improvements.
  • Supervise and direct monitoring of hospital areas and work sites where radioactive materials are used or stored
  • Perform annual quality assurance testing of all radiation producing machines in the hospital.
  • Serve on Radiation Safety Committee as radiation expert and instruct hospital personnel in safety principles and regulations related to radiation hazards.
  • Direct the assignment and control of film, ring, and TLD badges for appropriate personnel.
  • Prepare reports on analyses of radiation hazards in the hospital and make recommendations for improved methods of control.
  • Meet with South Carolina State officials (DHEC) for unannounced inspections of radioactive material licenses
  • Oversee implementation of Multi-leaf Collimation, OBI, Portal Imaging, record and verify systems, Intensity Modulation Radiation Treatment and other developments in technology for the Hospital.
  • Perform treatment plans as needed 
What qualifications you will need:
  • Currently Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology or Board Eligible in Medical Physics, BLS-Healthcare provider
  • Must have, as minimum, an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Radiation Therapy Physics or a related discipline with additional course work directly related to the physics of radiation therapy.
  • Continuing education is required and necessary. This is accomplished by the attendance at professional society technical seminars annual scientific meetings, etc. Professional Society membership is strongly recommended.
  • Completion of a Residency Program in Radiation Therapy Physics preferred. Performs in accordance with delineated job responsibilities and satisfactorily completes a yearly evaluation based on these responsibilities.
