General Summary of Position
MedStar Washington Hospital Center has an opportunityfor a Medical Librarian to support our healthcare professionals. This essentialposition provides knowledge-based information services, including referenceservices, outreach, and training, to Hospital researchers, clinicians, andother health care providers and Hospital staff to support patient care,educational, and clinical research objectives. Identifies informationrequirements and maintains and develops print and online collections ofresources, including the development of online platforms for patron access toresources.
Primary Duties
Performs general reference services, including searches of online databases, general internet resources, print resources, and other sources to provide relevant information to clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers and Hospital Center staff to provide relevant and timely information for patient care, organizational processes, education, and clinical research.
Develops, performs, and documents individualized research consultations and complex literature searches in online databases, including evidence-based and systematic reviews; maintain current knowledge of online database and search languages and strategies.
Conducts both large group and individual orientation sessions and training on library resources, including online databases, literature searching, current awareness services, citation management software; develops print and online fact sheets and instructional guides for library users.
Participates in departmental, interdepartmental, and interdisciplinary committees and meetings, including morning reports, patient rounds, process improvement committees, and nursing councils, supplying clinical librarian services, scholarly literature, and other information as needed.
Engages in outreach to staff via displays at special events, announcements and updates through regular MedStar internal communication channels; special articles in internal and external professional channels.
Collects, verifies, tracks, and makes available information on MedStar author's publications and presentations.
Reviews, evaluates, and orders materials using MWHC associate recommendations, catalogs, book reviews, and library scholarship and best practices, among other sources, to recommend print and electronic resources that meet the informational, educational, and research needs of staff, including patient education materials for direct patient care and community outreach; reviews donated materials with the same considerations; recommends and maintain special collections as needed.
Codes, classifies, and catalogs books, audiovisual materials, and other reference materials for the collections following currently accepted cataloging rules and NLM classification systems.
Verifies and maintains electronic full text in the electronic journal collection; makes electronic full text accessible through links and link resolvers in databases; maintains remote access systems.
Evaluates materials in the print and electronic collections to make recommendations regarding discontinuation and discard of outdated or unused materials.
Oversees maintenance and software updates of the library computers, scanners, and other equipment
Maintains and updates the library website; ensure functionality of the Integrated Library System.
Provides reference and fact checking for MWHC publications; provides citation checks, copyright and permissions assistance for Hospital associates preparing manuscripts for publication
Collects, organizes and reports statistics on library services
Provides input on the development and maintenance of library procedures, policies, and best practices related to all library service areas
Engages in professional development activities to stay current on developments in the medical library field and to enhance skills; participates in local, regional, and national conferences and professional organizations.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science or an equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program with special coursework in health science librarianship preferred. Required
1-2 years of progressively more responsible job-related experience, Required.
