Job Description – Medical Laboratory Technologist
Under general supervision, performs routine tests in Medical Laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive, processes, and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures.
2. Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests in the areas of blood chemistry/hematology and urinalysis, as assigned; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, performs blood counts using microscope.
3. Performs quality control on test results, ensuring validity and accuracy.
4. Performs calibration and troubleshooting on testing systems and instruments to ensure adherence to established standards of accuracy.
5. Keeps records and reports on results according to established procedures.
6. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
8. Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
9. Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
10. Identifies and communicates abnormal patient results or issues by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse.
11. Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating blood chemistry/hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation equipment, performing manual methods of differentials.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates Degree MLT, BSMT (ASCP), or CLS (ASCP) strongly preferred
Extensive blood banking and transfusion service experience strongly preferred, including three to four years in a technical or laboratory setting
Work experience in a regulated environment (FDA, CAP, CLIA) strongly preferred
Supervisory experience strongly preferred
Valid Driver’s License with no major infractions and dependable transportation
Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously to patrons, donors, sponsors, and co-workers
Ability to organize and prioritize workload and meet deadlines
Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
Strong computer skills including intermediate skill level with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Ability to work with all levels and in a diverse work environment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and peers
Ability to exercise discretion on sensitive and confidential matters
