Full-Time Evenings 2:00pm-10:30pm rotating weekends and holidays

The Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead role considered an advanced role at the University of Maryland Medical System.  

MLS Lead role performs complex analyses on a variety of sample types, utilizing independent judgment to generate acceptable test results. Performs as lead by managing workflow, mentoring others and serving as a clinical and technical resource.

 

  • Performs routine and specialized laboratory testing in their assigned specialty area following all standard operating procedures.
  • Correlates laboratory findings with disease states; integrates and relates data from other laboratory specialty areas; confirms abnormal results and resolves specimen and testing discrepancies. Institutes appropriate follow-up measures for unusual test results.
  • Calibrates instruments; performs and documents preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and equipment; performs advanced troubleshooting on instruments and methods.
  •  Troubleshoots technical and analytical problems including specimen collection problems. Determines cause and provide direction to staff on resolution of problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures. Interacts with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Monitors and reviews quality control data and quality assurance information to detect shifts, trends, or problems with the accuracy and reliability of laboratory testing. Assists in documentation and investigation of quality occurrences. Initiates corrective actions for quality control and other quality and/or service problems.
  • Assists the laboratory manager and/or Core Lab Supervisor in compliance with a variety of regulatory and accreditation standards. Assists in the preparation of the laboratory for inspections. Evaluates CAP or other proficiency testing results as required. Assures customer service needs are met; assures staff meet TAT goals for the section on a daily basis; assures that all pending test reports are reconciled in a timely manner.
  • Provides assistance and direction to laboratory staff on resolution of problems. Acts as technical resource for laboratory staff in assigned areas.
  • Provides orientation and training to new employees in the assigned laboratory sections. Participates in the organization and implementation of staff in-service education programs.
  • Participates in performance improvement projects, special projects, and data collection/evaluation in the development of new test methods in the laboratory. Assists in updating standard operating procedures as required.
  • Provides section input on laboratory information system modifications required for section operations to the appropriate management staff. Assists the implementation of LIS changes for the section. Follows procedure for submission of LIS changes.
  •  Assists supervisor in the development of staff schedules and work assignments for assigned areas; modifies staff assignments as needed.
  • Assists with the inventory management process in the Laboratory. Orders supplies for designated areas and maintains adequate inventory.
  • Serves as supervisor on duty on assigned shifts; troubleshoots laboratory operations problems and initiates corrective actions.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of supervisor in his/her absence.

 

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, biology or related sciences or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, basic sciences or related field required or completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with relevant experience required.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience (bachelor’s degree) preferred; or minimum of 5 years of clinical laboratory experience (Associate in MLT or related field or Military Lab Technician Training program) required.

Licensure/Certifications:  ASCP or equivalent preferred.
