Job Information

Title: Medical Interpreter

Department: Clinical
Status: Full Time
Location: Clinical Sites
Reports To: Clinical Nurse Manager


Summary of Position

Provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients who cannot speak or understand English, when specifically required by the provider.


Education:High School diploma or equivalent required

Experience: One – two years’ experience with medical interpreting preferred

Certification: Medical Interpreter Certification preferred

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient’s native language
  2. Encourages communication between patient and health care team to build rapport and ensures that the listener understands the message
  3. Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested
  4. Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patients with appointment reminders, notifying patients of lab results, and completion of medical paperwork, including but not limited to, registration documents, sliding scale and charity care applications.
  5. Understand cultural gaps and explain any cultural gap to medical professionals that may interfere with compliance or understanding
  6. Collaborate with Medical and Behavioral Health Teams with marketing and community outreach events
  7. Coordinate outreach efforts by working collaboratively with community partner organizations, local churches, labor groups and other community entities
  8. Participate in outreach, community events and other activities (internal and/or external)
  9. Demonstrates concern for the rights, privacy and confidentiality of patients and others
  10. Understands the urgency of customer needs and responds quickly
  11. Demonstrates effective communication recognizing diversity among age groups, cultures, and educational levels
