Summary of Position
Provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients who cannot speak or understand English, when specifically required by the provider.
Education:High School diploma or equivalent required
Experience: One – two years’ experience with medical interpreting preferred
Certification: Medical Interpreter Certification preferred
Key Responsibilities:
- Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient’s native language
- Encourages communication between patient and health care team to build rapport and ensures that the listener understands the message
- Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested
- Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patients with appointment reminders, notifying patients of lab results, and completion of medical paperwork, including but not limited to, registration documents, sliding scale and charity care applications.
- Understand cultural gaps and explain any cultural gap to medical professionals that may interfere with compliance or understanding
- Collaborate with Medical and Behavioral Health Teams with marketing and community outreach events
- Coordinate outreach efforts by working collaboratively with community partner organizations, local churches, labor groups and other community entities
- Participate in outreach, community events and other activities (internal and/or external)
- Demonstrates concern for the rights, privacy and confidentiality of patients and others
- Understands the urgency of customer needs and responds quickly
- Demonstrates effective communication recognizing diversity among age groups, cultures, and educational levels
